God shave Camilla!

Prince Charles to marry Camilla
February 11, 2005

Britain's heir to the throne Prince Charles revealed today he will marry Camilla Parker Bowles, sparking intense debate about whether his divorced, longtime lover should become queen.

It is also unclear whether she will be called Princess of Wales - the late Diana's old title.

According to Sky News she will assume the title Her Royal Highness, the Duchess of Cornwall.

Charles' office promised to announce more details of the wedding soon, which will take place at Windsor Castle, west of London, on April 8.

Charles, 56, is scheduled to make an official visit to Australia from February 28 to March 5 in trip that will also take him to tsunami-hit Sri Lanka as well as New Zealand and Fiji.

Royal friends welcomed the news. But there was no immediate comment from Princes William and Harry.

Last year, a poll indicated that more Britons support Prince Charles marrying Camilla Parker Bowles than oppose it.

Thirty-two per cent of respondents to the Populus poll said they would support Charles if he remarried, while 29 per cent were opposed.

Thirty-eight per cent said they didn't care and two per cent had no opinion.

Parker Bowles, 58, is the great love of Charles' life. The pair met in their 20s at a polo match.

But she, who like Charles has two children - has faced an uphill struggle to rival his former wife, the late Princess Diana, in the public's affection.

Charles, 56, was divorced in 1996 from Diana, who blamed "rottweiler" Parker Bowles and the prying media for the break-up. Diana died in a Paris car crash in 1997.

Since then, and after years of choreographed appearances, Parker Bowles has been accepted as Charles' partner.

Charles is due to assume the throne after his mother Queen Elizabeth. As monarch, he would also assume a titular role as head of the Church of England, which is divided over the propriety of marrying divorcees.

Charles' sons William and Harry, in line to assume the throne after their father, have now accepted Parker Bowles, who shares official rooms with him at his London residence.

"The issue is whether she will take the full style and title of Princess of Wales and whether any children would have any place in the succession," Dr David Starkey, historian and constitutional expert, told Reuters.

"She would have to take the status of Prince Charles and ultimately that of queen unless there is legislation passed to the contrary," he said.

Charles and Camilla had a two-year love affair after first meeting in 1971. But the relationship cooled after Charles joined the Royal Navy.

Camilla then married cavalry officer Andrew Parker Bowles, divorcing him in 1995.

Charles admitted in 1994 that he and Camilla had resumed their affair after his marriage had irretrievably broken down.

Diana memorably said on national television "there were three of us in the marriage, so it was a bit crowded", while he was secretly taped sharing intimate pillow talk with his lover.

Biographer Penny Junor said: "This will divide opinion and some people will think it is the end of the world. But once it has happened, people will accept it.

"He's very much in love with her and she with him. That's just the way it is."

Constitutional historian David Starkey said he was "puzzled" by what Camilla's status would be following the marriage.

He said: "The immediate presumption must be that she is Princess of Wales.

"People may think that the Diana phenomenon is almost as faded as her fountain, but there will be Diana-maniacs who will get cross."

Dr Starkey said dealing with the issue of Camilla's title would be crucial to the success of the marriage in the eyes of the public.

"The issue can't be avoided if he becomes king."

Dr Starkey added that he believed it would require parliamentary legislation to allow Charles and Camilla to wed without her automatically assuming the title Princess of Wales.

Camilla soon became a recognisable figure and in April 1997 took a tentative step into public life when she became patron of the National Osteoporosis Society. An official photograph was released to mark the occasion. In July that year, Charles hosted a party for Camilla to celebrate her 50th birthday.

We are still a Monachist country cos John Howard put up a model that would fail where the pollies would elect their head of state and not the ppl.

"Princess-Consort" will be a rather bizarre title for her though considering Henry VIII's wives were all "Queen". It sort of sets the precedent that always the monarch's wife shall be "Princess-Consort"

The 2 different spkesmen from the Australian Monarchist League were interviewed on CH10 and ABC. They were gloating about how nice it was, but both looked like a couple of old poofs!.

Each to their own... I'm pretty sure our very own JayT would prefer Charles over both of them!

Think about it. All the people who are impartial about the monarchy and who usually vote for the status quo, will definitely switch to the republican side once King Charles and Queen Camilla start opening special events in Australia and greeting us in their Christmas speeches. It can only be good for republicans that this is happening.

I've got nothing against Camilla. Why on earth is she so unpopular? My guess is that she's the one blamed for luring Prince Charles from the lovely dovely angel Princess Di. Charles is a complete cad, yet it's always the women to blame. Women always get blamed for stealing men away from their wives. Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Anniston wer both blamed for Brad Pitt's break up, Delta was blamed for what's his name's breakup, Julia Gillard was the bad person when she had an affair with that married ALP guy...the list goes on...

Stickin' up for the underdog, again.

I think they are a bit old for that. I wonder if he can even get it up.

It would not surprise me actually if Charles abdicated. The Queen is still healthy and could reign for another 10 years.
They may infact wait those 10 years for her to age and become ill or whatever then if she abdicates (I dont see her abdicating) Charles may just pass it on to William to restore some sort of dignity and respect to the Throne in the Commonwealth, and in the United Kingdom.

If Charles becomes King I think we will see growing anger and frustration in the UK, Australia, NZ, etc because he has bugga all public support.

I can imagine next time we'll have a republic referendum. Pro-republicans will drum to the public's ears "If you don't want Prince Charles as head of state, say yes!"

And the other side of the political fence. "If you want Prince Williams to become our Head of State in our lifetime, say no!"
