I have never been to Beijing. I hope to go there sometime soon. I've noticed watching the progress here in this thread of the CCTV HQ that the skies are pretty much clear and blue most of the time. At least more times than those that report about Beijing smog. So what's the truth? Is the notorious smog of Bejing exaggerated? Because I hear sometimes described as covering the city the majority of the year and like sticking your face in the end of bus's exhaust pipe all day.

People like to taken photos in a clear day, isn't it? Beijing's pollution is bad but not as many people had thought. I read news that some atheletes are scared that the bad air in Beijing may cause asthma during Olympic days. That's really crap. Last year, Beijing has about 270 days of blue sky days (it's part of the pollution index in China). And when I transited my flight in Beijing, it's crystal blue sky. (Check my post #941 http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showth...179084&page=48). I had experienced bad pollution days (even sand storm esp in Spring). But I think it's getting better due to the Olympics. If you ask the truth, it may be somewhere in the middle between western media's image and the blue sky photos in this thread.

Also its winter now - i dont know about Beijing but in other cities their is markedly more smog in the summer months - coz of the heat or something.

That sounds unlikely to me, if only because of the heating-generated pollution.

Interactive panorama

I just stumbled across this link via OMA's website. Click and drag to see the view from near the top of the towers just as they were beginning the cantilever.

No, its very likely. You need warm air for smog.

Toronto goes through the same thing. We only have smog on hot summer days. Other than those days, the skies are nice and clear.
