You are right though Texan, China is a main reason why the cost of steel and copper have risen so much. Their growth is astronomical and well, all of those buildings need a lot of wire and a lot of steel. Seems there is one more country that is a heavy contributor to the cost and I want to say its India maybe since they seem to be changing class.

Not the first pic i've seen showing the big contrast from CCTV HQ and it's surroundings. Is this building near a depressed area, or these pics are taken from a long distance, being a camera trick?

It's in the middle of the main Beijing CBD. I don't know whether these decaying houses are close to the site though.

still over 1- month left, it should be no problem with the current speed, but I wonder if the crane can be removed from the top by then.

wow impressive! i have a few questions to ask-
1. what hotels would you recommend to be able to access visits to these architectural landmarks easily and conveniently, at the same time affordable yet neat?
2. will CCTV be open to public to go thru its internal loop? (and sky deck overhang?)
3. when is the best month to visit beijing and its modern architectural works (hutongs and city included) to avoid hazy and overly cold conditions?

thank you.

2. It won't open until late 2009, but once it does i'm pretty sure it will be open to the public
3. spring or fall, winter is too cold and summer is too smoggy; go to the qianmen area if you want some nice restored hutongs and authentic peking duck, its amazing!

Homeinns 如家 (www.homeinns.com) is the largest economical chain hotel in China. With USD30-50, you can get a nice clean room with AC, cable TV, free internet, hot water etc. You can go to www.ctrip.com to book homeinns or other hotels.

The small red building in below pic is one of their chain hotels in Beijing.
