All these new architecutres in Beijing, like the watercube, the egg, cctv building, and the bird's nest are justified for their costs. They are going to be tourists attractions for decades to come. The Great Wall of China costs a lot as well. Who wants to look at boring generic architecture anyway?

I find the headquarters unsightly. The structures are way too bulky, somewhat clumsy and they surely damage the 'open window' in the middle. Plus, however beautiful an idea may lie behind those stripes, they don't add anything attractive to the building. Perhaps at night the whole complex might look decent.

What a masterpiece! It looks gigantic and beautiful, along with the other jaggy building next to it, they look like a big artwork standing on Beijing CBD!

We looked at mountains until dawn, and then when dawn came, it was too pretty for me - there was pink and blue and gold, in the sky, and on icy places, brilliant pink and gold flashes, and the snow was colored too, and I said," Oh," and sighed; and each moment was more beautiful than the one before; and I said, " I love you, Momma." Then I fell asleep in her arms.
That was happiness then.

the cctv, egg, and the bird's nest all required vastly more amounts of steel than necessary. these projects may provide shock value and stand out as icons, and that is their saving grace. what i'm arguing is that the very same projects would never have been approved in the starchitects' home countries, and would never have been built if they were proposed by equally qualified yet anonymous architects.

notice i did not criticize the fourth project, the watercube. the watercube does make sense, and pushes architecture forward in non-aesthetic terms as well.

many of the reservations regarding these buildings also touch upon the willingness of the architectural patrons to accede to the proposals of foreign starchitects, and their unwillingness to grant the same opportunities to home grown architects.
Who cares now that they are built? There are always people who support and those who do not. All these icons will be generating tourist revenues for decades to come. The amount of money paid for the naming rights for the Bird's Nest is going to be huge for the next few decades. These are very beautiful and successful projects.

I really like this tower. The stripes, however, bring it down a little. Looked perhaps good on papers but doesn't work in reality so well.

That's no problem, soon they will find a way to cover the air vents in a way as to uniform their color without rendering them useless.
