if it really is that the skin was easily flammable material then im happy this happened now and not next year when people would be sleeping in there. They then should redo it with proper material that doesnt spread fire like that.

If that wasn't the case, then im really sad this thing burned down. And what is even worse that someone died because he was trying to do good by saving the building.

I think it'll take a couple of days before we know whether the structure is savable but im so happy the main cctv tower didnt get damaged

I have the same feeling actually. it's very fortunate on,

1. it's burning now than half year after;
2. the much important CCTV tower is intact;

It's sad enough that people got killed, that's what is what really matters if you ask me, not the material loss, although it's also sad and despite the spectacular fire.
I really can't imagine the structure isn't damaged enough to make the building unstable. I guess it will have to be demolished and rebuilt, I don't know if "repairing" is enough in that case - I think the high temperatures must have damaged the internal structures in some way, even though the fire was relatively "short and quick".

You can't compare this building with a tower constructed 30 years ago. Things have changed by now.

I've just watched the video "cctv how the fire started" on youtube and you can see the roof of the building is smoking at the end. I hear people say firecrackers are possibly the cause, but how then? It's more likely it were displayshells which have a huge effect, I saw some very big ones, at least 8 inch shells. I know it cause I shoot them myself.

Anyway, shame on the fireworkscompany who are pro's and made a terrible miscalculation. Thank god it didn't collapse and the facade/interiors can probably be rebuilt.

@skyscraper03: Why repost the pic while its shown twice above you?
And I can't see them really laughing, I'm sure they're not happy with the fire.

Who's laughing? And even if these guys were laughing, it wouldn't be anything to be ashamed about. Are you crying all day long because children are starving in Africa?

they dont know who's in that building, it could be their best friend or neighbor or college. I'd be worried if anyone was hurt, not start laughing because your own city just lost a huge amount of money.

ok basically...

the building was:

1. designed like a chimney (Koolhaas in trouble), and was
2. set alight by illegal fireworks (Hunan Fireworks in trouble)
3. that CCTV overrode local police attempts to stop (CCTV in trouble),
4. that the contractor failed to hose down while the fireworks were going off - unlike all the other buildings in the area with different contractors (Beijing Urban Construction Group in trouble),
5. and that was fueled by zinc in the cladding (engineering firm Arup Associates, and their fireproofing record in trouble).

The insurance company and lawyers are going to have a field day.

Would the zinc cladding be in Arups remit or the Architects?

Supposing (just supposing) this building is deamed safe - and they re-clad it would any one want to stay in a hotel that went of like a roman candle?

I suspect it will get knocked down anyway.

How on earth do you know they are laughing about the building? That's a pretty big assumption, they could be laughing about almost anything.

True.

Can anyone explain to me what the chimney is all about? What was wrong with the design? Lots of buildings have huge atriums, what was wrong with this one?

Found this on Asahi. Is it true that the fireworks they were launching were illegal?

There was an article on the previous page that made it sound like CCTV was intentionally trying to burn down the other tower. Of course, the news is often bias and implies untrue things to get readers.
