IRKUT | MS-21 News & Discussion

Quote:
The Irkut MC-21 (formerly known in English as MS-21 Russian: МС‑21 "Магистральный Самолёт 21 века" - "Magistralny Samolyot 21 veka" - "Airliner of the 21st Century") is a series of three twin-engine short-range and mid-range Russian jet airliners with a capacity of 150-212 passengers being developed and to be produced by Irkut and Yakovlev Design Bureau of the United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) group.[5]

The design is based on the never-realized, twin-engine Yakovlev Yak-242 as a development of the three-engine Yakovlev Yak-42. According to a recent statement made by Russian deputy premier Dmitry Rogozin, the name of the MC-21 serial production aircraft will again be Yak-242.[6][7]

Due to replace the Tupolev Tu-154 and Tupolev Tu-204/214 in service,[8] the MC-21 certification and delivery was initially planned by 2016,[9] but delivery was delayed to 2017.[10]

The initial design is to include composite materials (about 33%), increasing to 40-45% provided a composite wing is added in 2015. In March 2008, a contract was signed which will see Sukhoi Civil Aircraft Company, a subsidiary of Sukhoi Corporation, designing and manufacturing composite wings for the aircraft.[11] Engines supplied for the Russian domestic market will be the Aviadvigatel PD-14.[12][13] In December 2009, Pratt & Whitney announced that the Irkut Corporation had selected the PW1000G engine to power the MC-21.[14] On August 20, 2009, Hamilton Sundstrand, a subsidiary of United Technologies Corporation, announced they had signed a $2.3 billion deal with Irkut to supply systems for the MC-21.[15] Irkut also selected Rockwell Collins and its Russian partner Avionika to supply the MC-21's avionics.[16] Goodrich also a subsidiary of United Technologies Corporation, along with Aviapribor, secured the mandate to develop an integrated control system for the MC-21.[17] The Interior will feature furnishings from Zodiac Aerospace, coordinated from C&D Zodiac in Huntington Beach, California. The Water and Waste Systems of the aircraft will incorporate innovations from Zodiac Aerospace in Carson, California.

The designer plans that the MC-21 will be 10-15% more efficient than Airbus and Boeing aircraft in the same class and it will have a 15% structural weight efficiency advantage, 20% lower operating costs, and 15% lower fuel consumption than the Airbus A320[11] with an initial target price of $35 Million U.S.D.

Really looking forward to flying on this one one day. The wider cabin should make for a comfortable economy cabin!

Lol i was gonna start this thread some time before roll-out ceremony since currently there's very limited info on the program.
Aight, for that matter...

Section of the first 'flying' MS-21, september 2014

There's also an 'optimistic' version as of her maiden date flight which is april-july 2016. That is according to Russia's 'industrial' deputy prime minister who is known for his populism though. Anyways, so far there have been no reports of the program going behind schedule.

Stay tuned for more.

It will seem like as of right now, the Chinese appear to be ahead with the C919. How long the tests will eventually take is another matter entirely. Anyways, I hope they don't rename the aircraft as Yak-242. I find MS-21 so modern sounding.

Does anyone have airline renderings in MS-21 colors?

If the claims for ~15% lower fuel burn and ~20% lower operating costs compared to A320 and B737 are true, this aircraft should become quite attractive to many airlines.

There figures have to be prooved. When there figures where published, there was no 737max and no A320neo.
The competition doesn't sleep.

But will western Airlines want to buy Russian planes? i mean wouldn't surprise me if there was sanction against these planes in the future.

I wouldn't put too much trust in the C919. Frankly, the Chinese have many times demonstrated that they are incapable of producing airliners. The Comac ARJ21 and Xian MA60 are the most recent examples of derailed projects.

Some more trivia...
Elements of the frame: metal alloys, fiberglass, carbon fiber.

Hmm. It is interesting that the designers chose to have a metal fusalage when they were already doing CFRP wings and empennage. I would have thought that the savings in maintenence when having a carbon fiber fusalage would have been pretty substantial.

At least it means that there is still hope of seeing a polished aluminum livery!

Apparently, fuselage CFRP winding requires equipment UAC does not possess. My guess would be it's too expensive or/and takes too much time to obtain, while Irkut is very sensitive about making everything on the schedule and without extra expenses. I believe the main reason is time. There is no way MS-21 would perform maiden flight in 2017 (or maybe even 2016) if its fuselage was composite.

The technology we are talking about has been used in Russia for quite a while now by the way, but unfortunately - as is often the case with Russia - only in the military. It was first introduced in early 70's with SS-20 ballistic missile.

Real but not natural. It's created by this steampunk high-voltage impulse generator:
