Russia’s Irkut unveils MC-21 passenger aircraft

Russia-based aircraft manufacturer Irkut has rolled out its first MC-21 passenger aircraft at the company's Irkutsk aviation plant. MC-21 is a range of twin-engine, short to mid-range aircraft that can carry between 150 and 212 passengers.

The airliners are currently built for upcoming flight and strength tests at Irkut's assembly line at the Irkutsk aviation plant. Irkut president Oleg Demchenko said: "We managed to get together the team of like-minded colleagues. "All programme members are the leaders of domestic and world aviation industries. We work together and we believe in MC-21 aircraft being the best in its class."

The MC-21 airliner has been developed and co-produced by Irkut and Yakovlev Design Bureau of the United Aircraft (UAC) group. Other UAC enterprises such as Aviastar-SP, newly established AeroCompozit and UAC-Aggregation Center are also involved in the MC-21 programme.

If it's ''ugly'' then it's ugly like B787 and A350, and old pieces of junk like A320 and especially B737 are very ''beautiful'' babies... LOL

that seems to be the trend. The new Airbus A350 and Boeing 787 dropped the bulby nose and adopted a more straight line one

compared to how they were in the past

Yeah. This for sure has something to do with aerodynamics and weight savings. Also advancements in technology can make the radome smaller, lighter and needs less protrusion, hence the smooth curve. Exterior beauty is not something airlines and other operators factor in when buying aircraft unlike cars. I'm sure the MS-21's nose is far more efficient aerodynamically compared to the 737 and A320.

The Russians know their sh*t in designing airplanes. They have been making planes for almost as long as powered flight itself. The thing the Russians can improve on is sales and marketing. The 737 and A320 are not perfect planes and I'm sure the MS-21 is not either, but many airlines could benefit from a 3rd player. The MS-21 could be a great alternative for LCCs in Southeast Asia, India and Europe if Russia can grow its service network.
