In a move to ensure better and comfortable services to its commuters, the Delhi Metro is planning to implement a host of new measures.

"The move is aimed at better handling of the passengers and comfortable services to all the public using the Delhi Metro," a DMRC spokesperson said.

On the Dilshad Garden to Rithala route, six coach trains will be introduced within next 3-4 months, he said, adding that presently, 29 four coach trains runs on this 25 km route, and ferries around 3.5 lakh passengers daily.

On Jahangirpuri to Huda City Centre route, six more trains are being converted to eight coach. Already 27 eight coaches trains have been pressed into service on this route.

These operate in such a way that during morning peak hours, Rajiv Chowk Metro station gets two eight coaches trains out of every three trains approaching the station, the spokesperson said.

Two additional trips will be started from tomorrow from Kashmere Gate towards Gurgaon direction, which is also the busiest section, from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM, to clear the passengers rush.

Meanwhile, on the Dwarka Sec-21 to Noida City Centre/Vaishali route, two eight coaches trains have already been introduced in service.

Further, 29 more such trains will be inducted into service on the route, he said.

From tomorrow, two additional trains will be inducted during peak time, one from Janakpuri West to Vaishali and one from Noida Sec-16 to Dwarka Sec-21 for clearing the peak hour passengers rush, the spokesman added.

The Delhi Metro's network is among the fastest growing metro networks in the world. It has grown to 190 kms of operational network since it has started its operations in 2002 and presently carrying around 25 lakh passengers every day.

Two additional trains, which were using both platforms at Central Secretariat Metro station for going towards Badarpur, were introduced from September 4.

Bombardier to design driverless system for Delhi Metro line

Bombardier has been awarded a 47 million euro contract to design and install a CBTC driverless system for a new metro line in Delhi.

The city’s new Line 7 will be equipped with Bombardier’s CITYFLO 650 system as it continues to expand its semi-automated system.

Once in use, Line 7 will become the first driverless mass transit system in India.

Bombardier has said it will design, build, install, test and commission the solution – completing the delivery in two phases between Mukundpur and Maujpur, and Maujpur to Shiv Vihar.

Work on the new automated line should be completed by 2017.

Peter Cedervall, president of rail control solutions at Bombardier Transportation, said: “This is another important new contract with our valued customer Delhi Metro, supporting their expansion of the network.”

Bombardier’s CITYFLO 350 system is already in use on Lines 5 and 6 of the Delhi Metro.

Proposal to extend airport metro to IFFCO Chowk, Gurgaon

NEW DELHI: The Urban Development ministry has asked the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to consider extending the airport metro corridor to IFFCO chowk in Gurgaon so that the ridership as well as property development revenue of the line can be boosted.

The DMRC had moved a proposal seeking grant or equity from central and Delhi governments for the airport metro line after taking charge from private company Delhi Airport Metro Express Private Limited (DAMEPL) but the Ministry said that it should be the last resort and asked DMRC explore ways to raise funds and turn profitable.

Among the possible measures it suggested was extension of the line to Gurgaon's Sector 29, which had earlier been floated when DAMEPL was incharge.

After DAMEPL pulled out, the DMRC began operating the service but issues related to the estimated Rs 2,000 crore airport metro line debt remains unresolved and the day to day running of trains on the route is also reported to be a loss making venture, sources said.

"The ministry has told the DMRC that the option of seeking grant or equity from the government should be considered only as the last resort. It has asked the Delhi Metro to look for other ways raise money and also see if the airport line can turn profitable if extended to Gurgaon," a source said.

The sources said that a proposal to extend the Airport metro line to IFFCO chowk was floated in the past but there were issues regarding how additional concession could be given to a private concessionaire.

"The ministry has suggested that in the changed scenario, where the DMRC itself is operating the Airport metro line, it can be extended to the IFFCO chowk, which may result in a sharp jum in ridership as well as property development revenue," the source said.

The ministry has also told the Delhi metro that it should try and make the line viable by exploring other option. They said that in a letter the ministry has also told DMRC that to meet the cash requirements for the airport line, it should tap its internal resources or financial markets or institutions.

Being a government owned company with an excellent track record, the DMRC might be able to raise a loan at a cheaper rate than the private company that was earlier operating the line, the ministry has opined.

The ministry has also suggested that the DMRC should explore the possibility of raising money for the airport line through bonds as has been done by the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL).
