This thread is quite depressing. In 1 to 2 generations Geneva will look like a brutalist nightmare. Is this what we have become? Incapable of building anything beautiful anymore?

This is a long-running story. The kind of joke possible only in Switzerland, or perhaps Geneva.

The story begins in 2009 with the project of raising the former industrial building (now converted into student housing) shown above. In 2014, the Department of urban development, housing and energy allows the raising of the building. Unfortunately, the project displeases the City of Geneva and some associations for the protection of the architectural heritage, that appeal and win the case. The authorization is cancelled. In 2016, the project is finally approved in second instance following on from the now favorable opinion given by the CMNS*. The City of Geneva brings a new action against the decision, this time in vain. The developer submitted 30 projects and lost hundreds of thousands Swiss francs (architects, lawyers). But the story is not finished!

Now, we are in 2017 and nothing has been decided yet. The developer will perhaps submit a new project and apply for a new building permit. Some persons (who?) still “suggest” a better integrated roof structure. The work should start next year.

Lancy Pont-Rouge train station has been inaugurated today. It is the first one out of five stations along the new CEVA railway link to be put into service.

The only station entirely constructed on the surface is the primary victim of cost control. Most of the glass bricks designed by Jean Nouvel have been replaced by simple glass parapets. Only the glass bricks whose function is to bring the light to the underground have been placed.

In the background of the picture shown above, one can see the future Pont-Rouge business district, in the heart of the PAV area, one of the largest in Europe (230 ha) in full urban transformation.
