All local approvals have not been secured for this project. Now we just to have to wait and see if the Federal grant to fund the route is actually secured...

County Board OKs route for bus rapid transit

The Milwaukee County Board on Thursday approved a route for proposed bus rapid transit service between downtown Milwaukee and the Milwaukee Regional Medical Complex in Wauwatosa using sections of Wisconsin Ave. and Bluemound Road.

The County Board action followed approval of the route this summer by the Milwaukee and Wauwatosa common councils, and this united support will enable county transportation officials to apply for a federal transit grant that would pay 80% of estimated costs, officials said.

An unfortunate, but hopefully temporary setback to extending the streetcar line up to the under construction arena district.

Quote:
Federal grant application for streetcar extension to arena unsuccessful

Milwaukee this year did not win a $20 million federal grant to extend the downtown streetcar system on Fourth Street to the future site of the arena.

The city in late April applied for the grant to pay for the estimated $40 million project. That extension would add track along North Fourth and Fifth streets between the Milwaukee Intermodal Station on West St. Paul Avenue and the future arena on West Highland Avenue.

The article below is from today's Milwaukee Business Journal. This project is another small step closer to becoming reality.

Quote:
Bus rapid transit advances to next stage of planning with federal approval

Milwaukee County received federal approval to enter the next stage of planning an east-west bus rapid transit route between Milwaukee and Wauwatosa.

The nine-mile route would run faster and more frequently than existing bus lines, creating a new option for daily commuters working downtown and the Milwaukee Regional Medical Center, or points in between. The approval from the Federal Transit Administration announced Friday by County Executive Chris Abele means environmental and engineering studies can begin.

Here's an update of what's going on with the streetcar project courtesy of an article in today's Business Times.

Quote:
Grant to support Walker’s Point, Bronzeville streetcar planning

The city of Milwaukee plans to use $750,000 it is getting from the U.S. Department of Transportation to conduct development planning along proposed streetcar extensions in the Bronzeville and Walker’s Point neighborhoods.

Actual routes for streetcar extensions along Dr. Martin Luther King Drive into Bronzeville or into Walker’s Point have not been finalized yet. The routes would be developed off an extension planned along Fourth Street that would service the new Milwaukee Bucks arena.

An article on the proposed BRT project from today's Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

Quote:
Report: Bus rapid transit would reduce car lanes

Establishing bus rapid transit service in the busy east-west corridor between downtown Milwaukee and the Milwaukee Regional Medical Center in Wauwatosa will require pushing cars and trucks out of two lanes of traffic along Wisconsin Ave. and Blue Mound Road, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee urban planning graduate students say in a new report.

Automobiles would lose their dominant place in traffic throughout the entire 7-mile route in order to provide sufficient space for lanes set aside for exclusive use of buses, under recommendations in the students' report.

This is not the final design of the Milwaukee BRT project, it is the link to the report created by a local university mentioned in an article I posted a little over a week ago. I thought I would post it just in case there might be anyone interested enough to take a look at it.

Quote:
Transportation Workshop: Bus Rapid Transit in the Milwaukee Region

Following a summer when the initial Milwaukee County East-West Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Corridor Feasibility Study was approved by the City of Milwaukee, Village of Wauwatosa, and Milwaukee County Board, UWM SARUP held its second BRT workshop course. The Fall 2016 students focused on 1) messaging to communicate potential benefits and challenges of BRT to key audiences and 2) visioning to identify opportunities and address key challenges as the East-West Corridor BRT project moves forward and future phases of BRT are considered in the Milwaukee region.*

This article from UrbanMilwaukee.com does an excellent job of laying out the construction timeline this year for the streetcar project. There is much more detail in the article than what I cited below, for those interested please visit the link I provided.

Quote:
Streetcar Track Construction Starts in April

The first track for the Milwaukee Streetcar will be installed in April of this year. The initial segment built will be a double-tracked section running from the Milwaukee River to the Milwaukee Intermodal Station along W. St. Paul Ave. From there, crews will work to build the rest of the route over the next year. Service is on track to begin in the fourth quarter of 2018 following testing.

Kiewet Infrastructure project manager Michael Eithier briefed the city’s Joint Committee on Downtown Streetcar Implementation today on construction staging details regarding what his firm regards as a three phase project.

From Metro Report

http://www.metro-report.com/news/new...or-sought.html

Milwaukee Streetcar operator sought
20 Feb 2017

USA: The City of Milwaukee has issued a request for proposals for the operation and maintenance contract for the future downtown streetcar line. The deadline for submissions is April 4, with the selection of a preferred bidder expected on April 18.

The contract would cover 15 to 18 months of pre-revenue services starting in July, with five years of revenue service due to begin in late 2018. There would be an option to extend this for a further five years

Some more streetcar related news from today's edition of the Milwaukee Business Times:

Quote:
Some Milwaukee County supervisors want MCTS to operate streetcar

Milwaukee County could submit a proposal to the city to operate the downtown Milwaukee streetcar system.

Whether the county will be able to submit a response to the RFP in time is unknown. The county and MCTS has already missed the March 2 meeting for groups interested in operating the streetcar.

The County Board’s Transportation, Public Works and Transit Committee approved the measure on Wednesday. But, the full board won’t vote on the proposal until March 23, and then it would need approval from Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele.

There is also a state law and county board provision that says Milwaukee County cannot spend any money on the streetcar.

The following article is from today's edition of UrbanMilwaukee.com. As the article states rails for the project have started arriving an actual right of way construction is supposed to be starting in the next 15 to 20 days.

Quote:
Streetcar Track Steel Has Arrived

The first shipments of steel that will form the actual track for the Milwaukee Streetcar have arrived. The segments, delivered via flat-bed truck from Indiana, are being stored in the curb lane near the Wisconsin Department of Transportation office at 1001 W. St. Paul Ave.

Ultimately the city will accept delivery of 474 80-foot long segments that will be stored at five spots in the curb lane on city streets. Those steel rails will then be welded together into 320-foot long spans by a nationally-traveling team that specializes in electric flash butt welding. The steel is expected to be fully delivered by the end of the month.
