Svartmetall tours PARIS- 2014 08 07 - 2014 08 14

Welcome to Paris!

As always with my photo threads, this is a full city tour, warts and all and basically a collection of shots that I find interesting. Whilst I am not really a good photographer by any stretch of the imagination, I hope you all find this an interesting little tour. I tried to see some areas that are a bit different as well as capturing the standard tourist fare.

I was playing tour guide for my wife, her Cousin and her Aunt from China. None of them had seen Paris before, so I wanted to give them the grand tour of what is one of the beautiful cities of the world.

So, here we go!

Day One - We arrive

We arrived into the very unusual CDG terminal 1, but I didn't have my camera to hand. Terminal 1 is... Not a good entrance to Paris unfortunately.

Here we are at the station waiting for RER B to the centre of the city.

Arriving at Chatelet-Les-Halles RER station.

The maps on the RER. When I first came to Paris in 2004, this was the first info board with lights for the stations that I saw.

Arriving at the RER-A station, Nation.

Above ground finally at Place de la Nation.

The building we stayed in. We were on the top floor - had some amazing views across Paris!

Boulevard Picpus.

One of the columns.

As always with Paris, beautiful boulevards lined with trees abound. Time to explore the centre as the lights come up.

Night lights on our first day to come.

Arriving at the Nelson Mandela Gardens.

Paroisse Saint-Eustache, lit up beautifully at night.

Paris is bathed in a beautiful, warm glow at night.

And there is always street dining.

The monuments can appear to be as beautiful at night as they are in the day.

Even the entrance to famous museums. Here we see Perrault's Colonnade.

And the church opposite it.

The beach on the Seine.

Night reflections.

A tower of chairs.

I loved the moon in this shot.

Beautiful clock on the side of the building.

Palace of Justice I believe.

Notre Dame at night!

Metro line 6 at Cité.

Line 1 at Chatelet.

Graffiti at Nation.

Artful leaking.

Line 1 at Nation.

Day 2 coming up. These are probably my worst shots of Paris so I apologise for the lead in, but hopefully better are to come.

Day 2 - Versailles

One cannot come to Paris without going to Versailles, so we started on our way.

First up, the view from our apartment near Place de la Nation.

Metro Line 1 at Bastille.

Changing to line 5.

Arriving at Gare d'Austerlitz.

Changing to RER C.

Turned out that the RER C was undergoing maintenance work, so we had to take line 10 to Javel Metro station.

Finally waiting for the RER C at Javel.

Arriving at Versailles Rive-Gauche.

Mairie de Versailles.

Next up - the Palace itself.

Here we are! We have arrived (along with half of the world it seems). The Palace of Versailles!

Such a poseur.

The gates of Versailles.

Chapel.

Yeah, there were massive queues for the chateau, so we decided to walk around the grounds first.

The gardens are quite impressive.

Back to the chateau.

Out to the gardens.

Hedge maze.

Poseidon?

Fellow tourists.

Our next destination, the Grand Trianon.

More to come.

Grand Trianon interior!

Billiard table, really?!

Gardens.

Details on the fence at the Grand Trianon.

More to come.

We continue with the petit trianon.

And it's grounds.

I believe these are called the English gardens.

Goats also graze on this site.

Time to walk back towards the main palace.

And to queue to go inside.

There is renovation occurring at the moment.

But wow, it's stunning.

Next - we go inside.

So this next set barely needs an introduction since it is the interior of one of the most ornate and decorated palaces I have ever seen.

Here we are at the entrance.

And we're greeted by the chapel.

Sculpture outside the chapel.

Door is rather impressive.

A glimpse through the window to the roofline.

Back at the upper level of the chapel we can see the details more clearly.

The following rooms are ridiculously ornate.

Close up to finish for now.

Many more to come.

More ornateness for everyone to enjoy from Versailles.

The hall of mirrors.

More to come.

Looking out to the gardens.

And up at another ceiling.

And more ornate rooms.

Far less colourful, but still ridiculously ornate.

Halls of artwork.

More to come.

Finally we start to head out of Versailles.

Looking out of one of the windows.

Staircase to exit!

The entrance to the palace doesn't look as impressive in the reverse direction.

A chapel on the exterior of the grounds.

Walking past the Marie of Versailles again.

The "main" station (Rive Gauche) for Versailles. But we don't want that one.

We want to walk through Versailles! Most people don't actually both with this part of the town, but we wanted to take a different route back into Paris.

Arriving at the "other" station - Versailles Chantiers!

We take a train from this station in the next set.

Versailles Chantiers station.

Time to take the Transilien to La Defense.

One of the suburban stations - St. Cloud. I came back here later on in the trip actually as it looked like an interesting area of the suburbs.

Interior of the train.

Arriving at La Defense.

Walking through to RER A.

Waiting at the platform.

Train arrives and thus ends Day 2 of our trip in Paris.

Day three up next.

Impressive views from your apartment. I always thought those Parisian blocks have great views. I wouldn't mind meeting some local rooftoppers. I bet I could get some good shots of the city!

PS. I see the weather wasn't very nice!

Cool shots!

Thank you everyone! The views from the apartment were indeed amazing, we were very lucky.

The weather was not nice on this day. Other days were better.

Day Three - La Defense and Famous Sights

The start of our third day in Paris.

Another view from our apartment to start the day.

Here is a walk from our apartment to Nation (taken the day before)

Another view of Nation in beautiful weather.

On the RER A at Nation.

Arriving at La Defense.

The Grande Arche.

The Skyscrapers of La Defense.

This is actually a rather large mall!

There is some quite amazing modern architecture. It's the perfect blend of old and new in a very historic city.

The elevator to the top of the arch. Unfortunately the arch was not open to the public pending renovation at the moment.

More to come.
