Sacred places of Indianapolis

Sacred Places of Indianapolis

Indianapolis has a variety of locations and buildings that have been deemed sacred through its history, either as churches and temples or monuments, masonic temples, and final resting places.

Christ Church Cathedral

Christ Church Cathedral is the oldest standing church in Indianapolis. The congregation has occupied a church at this location since 1837. The current building was constructed in 1857. It became the cathedral for the Diocese of Indianapolis in 1954.

The top left is the original 1837 church.

St. Peter and Paul Cathedral

It is the seat of the Archdiocese of Indianapolis. The Diocese of Vincennes was officially renamed the Diocese of Indianapolis by Pope Leo XIII on March 28, 1898. Construction started in the 1890's and finished in 1907.

Sacred Heart Catholic Church

Founded 1875 by German immigrants. In 2001 the church caught fire and was severely damaged, but the church meticulously restored it to its original state.

Despite losing demographical weight to the south and west, the american north-east is still the heartland of its historically defining, euro-american heritage, architecturally and climatically.
Indianapolis seems to be a very typical center for the region. That can be read on a negative note (as in unextrordinary) or on a positive note (as in examplifying well s.th valuable).

Fletcher Place Church

Constructed in 1872

The steeple had been destroyed by a storm and the church was in danger of being demolished before being turned into condos.

Meridian Street Methodist Church

Constructed in 1906,the steeples were removed after the congregation moved north. The church was nearly demolished before being turned into condos. Although the conversion saved the sanctuary, it involved the destruction of the rear buildings.

Many older American cities feature remnants of old world thinking and architecture. Unfortunately, following World War II, many of these old urban cores were destroyed in a fashion that produced architectural results similar to the destruction of cities in Europe by the war (of course, without the human tragedy and loss of life).

What distinguishes Indianapolis from other American cities are its monumental spaces and early urban planning.

St. Mary/ St. Marienkirche

Established by German immigrants in 1858. By 1850, 13% of Indianapolis’ population had come from a German-speaking country. The current structure was built in 1910 and was designed by Hermann Gaul, a German immigrant from Cologne. Mass was held in German until a few decades ago.
The church is said to be modeled after the Cologne Cathedral.

St. Joan of Arc

Constructed 1920 on the near north side of the city. At the turn of the century this area became a wealthy suburb (although it is now in the center of town) as wealthy families moved away from the crowded old city. The church was inspired by the Church of Santa Pudenziana in Rome. The church was built in this style to distinguish it from nearby Gothic protestant churches. The stained glass windows were produced in Munich.

Very nice. Warm and attractive sanctuary.

Roberts Park Methodist Episcopal Church

One of the earliest congregations in the city (established 1821) they quickly grew and constructed this Romanesque Revival church between 1869 and 1876. Originally, a steeple had been planned but due to financial constraint it was never constructed (personally I think they should build it now). It is noted that the church was designed by D. A. Bohlen, who constructed it in popular romanesque styles taking foot in his home country of Germany at the time (Romanesque would not become popular in the US for another 20 or so years).
