I am originally from Ontario so I admit my bias. That said, after the Eiffel tower, Toronto's CN Tower is the granddaddy of them all. It's lighting is amazing, it's well proportioned, elegant, and looks like better with age.

I find many of the very new towers like the ones in China to brash and lack an elegance to them.

The Eiffel Tower was the greatest towers of the 19th century, the CH Tower was the greatest of the 20th I still think nothing has equalled since.

Oriental Pearl is the strangest looking of the lot. That one in Beijing is very interesting and didn't know about it.

On this subject...I remember some years ago a fire in a tall TV/Ob Tower, maybe the tallest of the time in Russia. I expect it is now repaired ?

DIGITAL TV TOWER, Brasília, Brazil

The Brasilia Digital TV Tower, also known as cerrado flower, is a broadcast tower which made digital television signal available for the whole Federal District and surroundings.

The tower is 180 meters tall, from which 120 meters correspond to a concrete structure and the rest to the metallic structure of the television antenna. Moreover, two glass observatories will complete the structure. The highest one - at 80 meters above the floor - will contain a restaurant with a panoramic view. The other one will be used as an art gallery.

Wasn't there an extremely tall tower that collapsed, possibly in Russia somewhere?

The Oriental Pearl is not only strange but it's gaud awful ugly. It looks like a Space Shuttle launch pad.

Sydney 2 great iconic structures but that tower isn't one of them. Every time I see it I have an urge to call the Colonel.

The Oriental Turd is absolutely hideous in person. Its a scar on the skyline of Shanghai. It looked dated the day it was completed and exponentially worse today. If they ever propose tearing that mess down I will donate money to the cause. Awful doesn't even begin to cover it.

Seattle Space Needle

Its definitely not the tallest (shorter by far than a lot of these already posted) but its among the most beautiful and iconic.

The Oriental Pearl tower doesn't speak to Western culture at all but perhaps that's the point. To us it's a bit gaudy but have you been in a Chinese restaurant? When you travel a lot you come to accept that different cultures have a different design aesthetic. Not all of it is going to appeal to our Western eyes and you learn to appreciate it for what it is.

I like Oriental Pearl precisely because it's very Chinese. If it looked Canadian it would be far less interesting to me. I wonder what you'd think of gold elephant tusks sticking out of a marble hall way table? In some cultures that would be viewed as beautiful ornamentation.

The Sydney Tower? Yes, it's not all that attractive. I'd put the Calgary Tower in that category as well.
