that map above is very impressive. Polish cities need to show off their tram systems, so many Poles think that if it's not subway/metro it doesn't count. Actually, Katowice has a more impressive transit system than Toronto which has 84 km of trams/streetcars and 60 km of subway, totalling 144 km, although metro would have higher capacity. still at 164 km Katowice is impressive.

next year should start an expansion of network in katowice borough, towards south.
after that network should be longer circa 15km

yes, but in my opinion it doesn't work as it should, lets say we are not even close to places like greater london, or paris metropolis.

heres the map:

bigger size version

there is a plan to make an overground metropolitan system for katowice,
but polish officials are moving like turtles

the plan:

some of [future metropolitan] lines are covering with sub-urban rail, so are more crowded, but its stil not a typical metro with high tonal frequency of journeys.

in the 1980's trams have had annual 350million passangers, for me impressive number.

currently is 100million per year. poles love cars, and as a post soviet country, to have a car is false luxury - but its changing, young people in some percent choose bike or rails.

Great thread! Thank's for author.

Whatever, We need promotion of public transport in Poland to be open for others. In the Upper Silesia, We need this very because We must have the best information for independent tourism. Who knows, maybe somebody discovers new places and find the best place to live for oneself in Upper Silesia or describe it on the popular blog.

I think that we should create a map of bus transport in Katowice agglomeration. That we're missing.

Final route revealed of new fast tramline
The City Hall of Katowice officially confirmed a final route of the new tramline, which will be built to connect southern districts of Katowice with the downtown. The route has been chosen from amongst five alternatives.

The decision about the tramline development was announced by the mayor Marcin Krupa in January this year. In spring, public consultations concerning the routes were conducted among inhabitants of the southern districts. Also, 650 citizens were surveyed to give theirs opinions about the investment. „79% of them were positive about the idea of the new tramline, only 17% were against the project. According to the inhabitants, the accepted time which can be spend to reach a tram stop is 5 minutes and the frequency of trams is 15 minutes” – said Mariusz Bryła from Collect Consulting.

Additionally, a pre-design study has been prepared on behalf of Tramwaje Śląskie (Silesia Trams) – the company will be responsible for the investment process. Traffic analysis, surveys findings, land ownership structure, cost of the investment and technical aspects of all the routes were taken into consideration in the pre-design study.

„The consultations did not give us a clear answer, which of the routes would be accepted by the majority of inhabitants. That is why we have decided to choose the final route basing on the pre-design study” – said Marcin Krupa, Katowice mayor.

The chosen route of the new tramline will run as follows (nine stops): Brynów Kolejowa, Ochojec Leśna, Ochojec Szenwalda, Ochojec Centrum Medyczne, Ochojec Kryniczna, Odrodzenia Łętowskiego, Odrodzenia Kościół, Kostuchna Bażantowo P+R, Armii Krajowej Pętla (terminus). The new route will be 5,2 km long. The travel from the terminus to the city center will take up to 30 minutes. The expected average speed of the tram will be 26 km per hour.

Construction works on the tram track will be started in 2018. The new infrastructure should be delivered in 2020. An estimated cost of the undertaking ranges between net PLN 95-110 million. Tramwaje Śląskie will apply for European Union funds to conduct the project.

THE municipal government in the Polish city of Katowice has identified the final alignment for a 5km tram line linking the southwestern district of Brynow with Kostuchna in the south

Residents along the proposed route, particularly those living in Ochojec, had fought the Zlotys 110m ($US 29m) project for several years because they feared it would cut the district off from adjacent woodland
