Revealed: Shanghai is the world's most highrise city

For long Shanghai has 'hidden' the amount of buildings it has; with the only source being Emporis, which incidentally does not accept data from non-English or German sources. -In terms of skyscrapers over 150m, both HK and NYC beat it, however in terms of highrises over 12 storeys Shanghai is far larger, possibly multiple times larger.

Back in 2011 the Shanghai Urban Construction and Communications Commission released data on floor levels (it hasn't done so again since, though I'm sure one can get the data on request).

http://www.shanghai.gov.cn/shanghai/...22ai38907.html

It states 20,032 buildings over 11 storeys, of which 8,725 are over 16 storeys. (It's also interesting to note at those current rates it was growing at 560 per year in buildings over 16 storeys, or 2200 for buildings over 11 storeys).

Emporis meanwhile -benefiting from the English language data- counts 7,931 buildings for HK (including observation towers, churches etc over the 12 storey/ 100m threshold):

Hong Kong | Buildings | EMPORIS

And NYC, 6,382 buildings over 12 storeys:

http://www.emporis.com/city/101028/new-york-city-ny-usa

In short with a higher threshold of 16 storeys Shanghai still beats the other two. At a similar threshold (11 storeys as opposed to 12 storeys) it may be doubly or triple times as high - but of course depending on how many of that are made up off 11 storey buildings.

From the air the difference is more obvious.

HK's built up area in all it's entirety - the city in the distance is Shenzhen so ignore it, (for a more familiar scale, urban HK below is almost exactly the same size as Manhattan - they're both 87 sq miles):

Shanghai's Puxi half to the same scale:

To summarise.

Highrises over 12 storeys:

Shanghai (2011) 8,725 - 11,032
HK (2014) 7,931
NYC (2015) 6,382
Sao Paulo (2014) 5,735

.

Can a similar question be asked for Sao Paulo? Emporis counts 5,735 highrises - but is that an undercount due to the Portuguese data?

Is that 12 storey buildings and +100m buildings, or 12 storeys equates to a +100m building?

sorry, that's confusing (I'll edit it out).

It's 12 storey buildings + any building over 100m that counts less than 12 storeys (eg a clock tower etc).

In terms of >100m:

I think HK still wins. If one adds the CTBUH data with the lowest possible variable of the highrises missed out in Shanghai, the cumulative highrise total would be 334,000m for HK and 163,258m for SH (at its lowest possible variable in 2013) and 109,720m for NYC.

HK 2354 buildings (CTBUH data)
SH 1463 buildings (CTBUH data + those missed out from SH Municipality figures for 2013)
NYC 794 buildings (CTBUH data).

In short HK builds higher, but not as many. in terms of the taller share of the highrises, SH grows by about 80-90 100m+ buildings per per year, so I hazard SH, in it's current highrise format, will still take 15? years to supersede with a more slowly growing HK.

*edit^ now showing the 2013 figures. SH built 141 buildings over 100m in 2012, and 256 in 2013, a growing rate which may see SH overtake HK in tall highrises aswell, within well, 4-5 years if it goes steady. Wow. I think SH is building taller now as it's running out of room, plus with the new metro network effect - it figures going even denser near the stops makes it more efficient.

Ok 2013 figures.

Shanghai 14,479 buildings over 16 storeys.

This compares with buildings over 12 storeys:

HK (2014) 7,931
NYC (2015) 6,382
Sao Paulo (2014) 5,735

(Emporis)

Wow! It's like Sao Paulo but with supertalls

But I think a few cities still beat Shanghai in terms of 200+ meter buildings (NYC Dubai and HK by a lot) which to me is almost as impressive in it's own right. In terms of actual skyscrapers it's on par with Chicago.

yep, skyscraper building has slowed quite some in the last 5 years, probably because of the prices and that little problem with HK vying for no 1 Chinese business park. Im sure it'll pick up again but for the time being theyre both avoiding a bubble (of the 56 skyscrapers built in China last year only a handful were in HK or SH), and for a while now have been with a the 'new normal' of below 10% growth. Although it's fast growing in biotech, IT and services, Shanghai still failed last year in making it's 7.5% target (it only made 7%). It's sending in record breaking R&D budgets for the long term, coupled with economic restructuring and accelerating reform - quality over quantity, but that doesn't translate to breakneck growth or office towers any more. Pretty much the case for all the big league cities - less of the office building frenzy, more of the sustainability. For the time being it's going to be mostly residential and leisure.

The height of a 30 storied building is usually around 100 meters or more. So 1463 building above 30 stories means around 1400 highrises (100m+ buildings). Awesome.
