12 Stories is a very low bar for high rises, especially since lots of standard commie block like apartments are constructed in that range. Hell, even a 3rd tier city like Changsha probably has more than Emporis Shanghai number (996).

However, Emporis is wildly incorrect as it comes to China. Especially when you look at cities where is Emporis number is within counting range and cross check it with photographs

According to Emporis,Changsha has only 76 Highrises and 52 Skyscrapers.

http://www.emporis.com/city/100232/changsha-china

The gap between reality and Emporis's number is even more dramatic if you look at obscure large cities such Lanzhou. Which it list as having 25 Highrises and 2 Skyscrapers...

http://www.emporis.com/city/102677/lanzhou-china

Now, if emporis can mess up number that's in counting range, possibly by an order of magnitude (in case of Lanzhou, more than an order of magnitude). Do you trust their Shangshai numbers?

daily newspaper advertisements? Who even do that these days?

A quick search on the Chinese equivalent of craigslist on 7/23/15 reveals

23,770 New construction residential sites are posting for Sale in Shangshai
http://sh.ganji.com/fang12/

397,775 second hand residential units for Sale in Shangshai
http://sh.ganji.com/fang5/

875,717 residential units are posting for Rent in Shangshai
http://sh.ganji.com/fang1/

398,783 office units posting for rent in Shangshai
http://sh.ganji.com/fang8/

37,664 hotels posting for stay in Shangshai
http://sh.ganji.com/fang10/

That's more than 1.5 million postings already.

just for kicks:
there are
105,642 storefront posting for sale/rent
http://sh.ganji.com/fang6/

83,830 factory/warehouses posting for sale/rent
http://sh.ganji.com/fang11/

Remember, these are units actively seeking buyers on a single (though popular) website. And except for may be hotels, they just represent a tiny fraction of total stock.

It's pretty clear the visitor submitted data to Emporis is very much lacking. According to the site places like London or hell, even Minsk have more highrises than Shanghai

I believe with Emporis since they have a completed list of the highrise building not just number claim. If you want me to believe you must give a me a complete list Shanghai highrise building not just city official claimed.

What about the picture ?? i only see hundreds highrise buldings in Shanghai. There is a lot of picture from another city like New York, Moscow, Hongkong, Singapore etc that looks like Shanghai picture with hundreds of highrise.
LMAO dude SHenzhen itself has twice the number of highrise buildings in New York. Have you ever seen how gigantic Shenzhen skyline is?? It's MASSIVE

This photo below is a tiny fraction of Shenzhen

Wow, I never realised how huge and developed Chinese cities had become before I came here, great ambition there and some fantastic towers, except for the commie blocks but even they look taller and more impressive that commie blocks in other countries

Okey just give me the name of another 1000 highrise building in Shanghai which is not including in Emporis list for Shanghai highrise.

Most of cities in the world including European, Asian, American are also had more highrise building than the number in Emporis.

But you must report the building in Emporis including the name of the building and storey not just city official claimed.

Another cities could claim they have 10.000 highrise building. Shanghai skyline picture looks to me around hundreds building not thousands.

Just compare it with Moscow, Hongkong, New York skyline picture and you will see thousands building.

Look again at the pictures on the first page for comparisons of the total aerial skylines. Emporis doesn't accept data in any other language other than English or German, and relies on users to put forward the specific building. Emporis is of course unheard of in China, plus the website's language stipulations frustrate anyone attempting to give in anything other than their own pics and measurements (one of the Spanish formers here tried for years to get the Chinese data put up but to no avail).

According to Emporis Shanghai has fewer high rises than London for chrissakes. Is that really to be believed??

Hong Kong, world record holder in its entirety, which according to emporis has 7x the amount than in the next picture. (The built up area of Hong Kong matches the area of Manhattan if you want a more familiar comparison). This is what 7,700 highrises looks like from a few miles up:

http://daily-photo.net

Shanghai's Pudong half to the SAME SCALE:
Also bear in mind this scale (the TV tower on the bend in the river for example is over 1500ft high, most highrises wouldn't even be seen). Also since this pic was taken Shanghai has added almost double the amount of tall.

image hosted on flickr

World's Largest Skylines Ranking - Page 2 - SkyscraperCity

I would hazard the second pic has almost double the amount of the first pic. If you updated the photo and took in the other half of the city, and it's highrise outskirts I imagine it would be 3x.

A better pic in more detail of about half of the last area. Seriously zoom in and start counting from
the left, keeping in mind anything that sticks out is 25-100+ storeys and anything that appears as a
stubby mid-rise is above 12 storeys already.

(Stadium near top of pic for scale)

How else does the worlds fastest growing city house up to 3000 new inhabitants each day but in endless high-rises?

I count highrise in that picture around hundreds building (+500) but not thousands.

This is list of cities by GDP. And Shanghai is still lagged behind New York, Tokyo, Seoul etc.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cities_by_GDP
http://www.citylab.com/work/2015/03/...l-city/386315/

Shanghai GDP only 300-400 billion.

List cities GDP 2020 projection and Shanghai still number 16
http://www.citymayors.com/statistics...ties-2020.html

I love Shanghai but i dont thing Shanghai highrise as dense as Hongkong highrise

^You just count only part of the area.

Hong Kong is dense because it is small. Shanghai is huge.

This thread does not talk about GDP of cities. Talk about the number of building. So that is irrelevant.

what on earth has GDP got to do with how many highrises a city has??? Obfuscation or what?

London, LA or Paris have larger GDPs than say Hong Kong or Sao Paulo, doesn't mean they have way more highrises.

And there are THOUSANDS of highrises in that pic. Try again, start at the top - keep in mind the scale of that stadium.

I think that pretty much reveals his bias. Either that or he thinks GDP correlates with how many highrises a city has.

SUPER OT but...

Your dated future GDP source states that Shanghai's GDP PPP will be 360 billion USD in 2020.

However, the Brookings Institute puts Shanghai TODAY as the 8th biggest metropolitan GDP PPP in the world at 594 billion USD.

Sauce

It seems you are not only under counting Shanghai's highrises you are undercounting it's GDP

The Brooking's institute is already in his wiki link. Of course PPP has its own problems when making international comparisons, and also has nothing to do with the thread topic. I really don't understand the point of GDP here.
