I think it's a good thing that the new skyscrapers are further out - below the existing highrises in the centre are old buildings.

The size alone is impressive. Why can't we just give them credit for what they've done with their cities in such a short space of time, instead of being threatened by it and trying to talk them down, find faults etc.
Of course they are not all great buildings but what did you expect, it's a developing country, it's still unbelievable what China has done in the last few decades and shanghai is undeniably one of the planets great creations. Give credit where it's due, the size of that place is staggering

i agree bc yea that was my reason saying i wanna visit it and can't wait what the next 2 decades will bring, im gen Z so a lot of people my age will witness this as we grow up. i dont wanna see more historical architecture/urban design, i live in a classical west european town its enough lol

While I do admit I am biased against the PRC, its not because I'm "threatened" by their progress but because of the general crassness of the PRC that I have encountered

I have to admit, I was pleasantly surprised there is less crassness in Shanghai compared to the typical PRC I have encountered during my holidays (Bali, Gold Coast, Hokkaido, HK etc)

So lets get that bias out of the way and talk about the merits of Shanghai skyline which I said it was indeed impressive due to its sheer size..but thats it...sheer size..outside Pudong and the bund, Shanghai was so-so and thats how I felt. I tend to judge a skyline not by the pictures but how it feels looking from the ground (i.e. I enjoy sydney skyline from darling Harbour or Singapore skyline from MBS than Pudong, even when the buildings are taller, from the bund)

I think once Shanghai starts beautifying it's shikumen and longtang streets, en masse it will be the premier city it could be. At the moment they're seen as slums, and degraded by add-ons and poverty, but the success of places like the French concession shows the potential for the whole city.

Also there are no less than three Chinese Old Towns to add to them.

I have also heard from other people that Shanghai isn't really impressive outside Pudong and Bund.

To a certain extend he's right. I've been to Shanghai and while the tallest of the tall are truly amazing, outside of the city center it looks more like Sao Paulo then say, NYC or Hong Kong (who both have more 200 meter buildings).
