The month isn't even halfway through, and Metra has already issued two public apologies over service disruptions.

Metra suspends double-deck coach procurement
Thursday, August 11, 2016

CHICAGO commuter rail operator Metra announced on August 9 that due to changes in the availability of capital required to fund its $US 2.4bn modernisation plan, the agency has temporarily suspended its search for a vendor to supply 367 double-deck coaches

However, a portion of the 367 coaches will arrive sooner than expected as Metra plans to take over an option from Virginia Railway Express (VRE) to purchase 21 coaches from Nippon Sharyo at an estimated cost of $US 2.5m per vehicle. Metra approached VRE about taking on this option because VRE may no longer require the full order

Rebuilt Metra locomotive returns to Chicago
08 Sep 2016

USA: Chicago commuter operator Metra announced on September 7 that the first of 41 locomotives being rebuilt by Progress Rail Services has returned to service. Following testing, Metra plans to assign the loco to its routes operated under contract by Union Pacific.

Metra awarded Progress Rail a $91m contract in 2015 to rebuild 41 EMD F40PH-2 and F40PHM-2 locomotives dating from 1989-92 to ‘like new’ condition. The work being done at Progress Rail’s plant in Patterson, Georgia, is expected to extend the locos’ service life by 10 to 13 years

Cubs' big day is also South Shore's
Nov 8 2016

Andrew Steele
[email protected],

The South Shore Line had its biggest day ever Friday, the day the Chicago Cubs celebrated their biggest day in more than a century.

The commuter rail line carried nearly 30,000 passengers to and from the city, with the Cubs’ World Series parade boosting ridership by almost 18,000, according to railroad officials.

“If I’m writing a narrative about Friday, I’m talking a home run, a grand slam,” South Shore President Michael Noland said. “The crowd started early and they kept coming.”

The South Shore ran four extra trains — two into the city and two out — and added cars to every train it could. “We had every car in service,” Noland said.

The rail line typically has about 12,000 riders on a weekday. Friday’s 29,253 was its largest recorded total, topping the previous record set on July 3, 2008, by about 5,000 riders.

And that July day had “two rush hours,” Noland said, with working commuters taking their regular trains and then more extra traffic coming from people heading into the city for nighttime fireworks.

On Friday, “this was all at once,” he said.

The Cubs celebration topped the 2015 Chicago Blackhawks Stanley Cup parade and rally by about 7,000 South Shore riders.

With rush-hour trains running at 130 to 140 percent capacity, the extra passenger load raised some challenges, but “everybody understood this was a unique experience,” Noland said.

Morning trains were running 15 to 20 minutes late, he said, but there were no arrests or significant safety-related incidents.

“The crews had their hands full,” Noland said, “and hats off to them.”

Local police assisted throughout the day with traffic control. Parking was as tight as the trains themselves — at East Chicago, drivers parked on Michigan Avenue all the way east to Kennedy Avenue.

At Dune Park Station in Chesterton, they were parked on both sides of U.S. 12 east almost to the Tremont Picnic Area.

Noland said passengers were packed on the Dune Park platform as a train approached Friday morning.

“The train comes down the track and it’s got the W flying,” he said. “The crowd went wild.”

He said the eastbound return trips were more difficult to plan for than the trips into the city, because it’s difficult to predict when people might want to leave. Some passengers had to wait at Millennium Station, for example, even if a departing train wasn’t full, in order to have space for some passengers at Van Buren Street, to relieve the crowding there.

Friday capped a Cubs post-season that included a “Cubs Extra” train for home playoff games. The train departed Millennium Station one hour after games played at Wrigley Field.

Noland said the extra train was essentially a “break even” financial effort meant to ensure passengers they’d have a ride home.

I know, I know. I always snip the images from my responses. But I left these in for a good reason.
The Crystal Lake train station is five short blocks away from the World Beer Cup-winning Bronze Medalist Crystal Lake Brwg.. When you learn that the Gold and Silver-winning breweries were in Germany, this is quite an accomplishment.
I went there once. It's a solid venue. But it doesn't have any food, so it must limit your on-premise consumption. It strives to keep the Beach Blonde on all the time.

Metra to order new locomotives and coaches
Friday, April 21, 2017

THE board of Chicago commuter rail operator Metra has given the agency the go-ahead to issue Requests for Proposals (RFPs) for the procurement of new locomotives and coaches as it begins the replacement of its ageing fleet

Metra has allocated around $US 200m for rolling stock purchases over the next five years, although the continuing rollout of Positive Train Control (PTC) could consume some of these funds. The board of directors has asked the operator to consider alternative forms of procurement, such as leasing, to maximise the use of available resources
