Some METRA Diesel Photos from Jonathan Lee

Inbound at A-3

Outbound, Central
Quote:
Metra 154 leads an outbound UP-West Line train at Central Avenue in Chicago's west-side Austin neighborhood. The CNW-style signal bridge here spans both the UP Geneva Sub and the CTA Green Line.

Cermak & St Louis

Quote:
In Chicago's Little Village neighborhood at St Louis Ave, Cermak Road jogs to duck under BNSF's Chicago Subdivision "Racetrack", above which passes rebuilt, repainted Metra F40PH 183 on an outbound express.

Train 65

Quote:
Metra Union Pacific West Line train 65 leaves downtown Chicago behind, running west on the UP Geneva Sub at Kedzie Avenue in the last bit of daylight.

Freshly rebuilt and repainted, Metra MP36PH-3C 413 is the first MP36 to wear an Operation Lifesaver logo. On its first post-rebuild revenue trip, it trails "Winnebago" 202 at Cermak Road with outbound Rock Island District train 421.

Waiting in the Wings

ATSF 92, en route to NRE Silvis, waits on Iowa Interstate's BICB as an outbound Metra Rock Island District train on the Beverly Branch approaches Blue Island, Vermont Street.

Freshie on the Heritage

Quote:
Metra's most recently rebuilt MP36, number 413, brings Heritage Corridor train 921 past the bare gantry at Homan Avenue in the Brighton Park neigborhood of Chicago. It's hard to see here, but 413 is also the first MP36 to wear an Operation Lifesaver logo.

The gantry once supported a B&O CPL signal, dating from the days of B&O control of the Alton, the original owner of this line. The weedy track in the foreground is a lead from BNSF's Corwith Yard, used for switch moves needing headroom. Between here and Brighton Park Crossing is Amtrak's Brighton Park maintenance facility, lightly used as most work is done at the coach yard near Roosevelt Road.

Desplaines Street 3-Way
Quote:
Seen from the Desplaines Street bridge, in- and outbound Milwaukee District trains pass while, overhead, empty equipment moves towards Ogilvie station.

217 Outbound
Quote:
Metra's newest acquisition, ex-VRE F40PH 217, leads a rush hour Milwaukee District train away from Chicago Union Station, passing under the signals at Jefferson Street.

Room(s) With a View

Quote:
Residents of the new-ish condos in the near west and north areas of downtown Chicago have grandstand views of the action on the north approaches to Ogilvie (North Western) and Union stations. On the approach to the former, two trains head out, including a Union Pacific West Line train with newly-overhauled and repainted Metra 178, the 'Village of Prospect Heights'.

North Clinton Street

Quote:
It's the thick of Chicago rush hour, with three Metra trains on the approaches to Ogilvie (North Western) Station: an outbound Union Pacific West Line train with newly-overhauled and repainted Metra 178, the 'Village of Prospect Heights', an outbound Northwest Line express, an inbound set of empty equipment. Below on the north approaches to Union Station, an outbound Milwaukee District North Line train with doubleheaded F40PHs ducks under the North Western elevation.

Gladstone Park

Quote:
With the downtown skyline shimmering in the very last light of the evening, Metra 147 leads outbound Union Pacific Northwest Line train 657 out of Chicago, having just made a stop at Gladstone Park.

Elmhurst

Quote:
A rather outdated sign still displays information for Metra's "Chicago & North Western West Line" at Elmhurst, Illinois.

Mile 16

Quote:
A pair of F40PHs smoke it up, leaving Elmhurst with an outbound UP West Line run.

Outbound at Belt Junction

Quote:
On a somewhat hazy evening, Metra 187 leads an outbound Southwest Service train through Belt Junction on the south side of Chicago. The Belt Railway of Chicago joins and crosses Metra's Southwest District here, while an NS lead from Landers Yard also joins. The Metra/NS trackage was originally Wabash's Decatur Division, part of their main line to St Louis.

Golden West Line

Metra MP36 423 powers an Elgin-bound Milwaukee District West Line train westward between Elmwood Park and River Grove during a brilliant sunset.

Roosevelt Road Fifty-Nines

Quote:
Metra F59PHs 98 and 99 meet at Roosevelt Road, Chicago. Both units are on Heritage Corridor trains- 99 is on train 919, and 98 is waiting to enter Union Station with equipment that will become train 921.

Metra 98 at Joliet UD
Quote:
After depositing passengers, Metra F59PH 98 leads the five cars of Heritage Corridor train 921, the last of the evening, towards the coach yard. Across the tracks from the grand old station building, the new Joliet Transportation Center is, amazingly, finally, not far from completion. As part of the project, UD Tower is being restored and is planned to house a small museum.

Metra For Suckers

Quote:
A nice sucker hole opens up at Racine Avenue, lighting up this outbound Milwaukee District train.

Central Ave Outbound

Quote:
At sunset, Metra 172, delivered in 1983 and as yet un-rebuilt, leads outbound UP West Line train 63 under the C&NW signal bridge at Central Avenue in Chicago's west-side Austin neighborhood. CTA's Green Line is to the right. This batch of F40PHs replaced C&NW E-units, and have now been in service longer than their predecessors!

Metra 100 at Brainerd

Quote:
Metra recently wrapped its first F40PH in its as-delivered RTA colors in tribute to the formation of the RTA. In commemoration of the unit's construction at EMD La Grange, the wrap includes the name, 'Village of La Grange' (number 100 had previously carried the name 'Ernest Marsh').

Here it leads Rock Island District train 607 on the Beverly Branch, approaching the Brainerd station stop. Behind the train is the crossover at Elizabeth St and the ramp up to the main line at Gresham Tower.

Buzzing the Highliners

Quote:
In its newly-applied RTA heritage wrap, Metra F40PH 100 blasts past the rows of stored Highliner EMUs north of 119th Street on the Rock Island District main line. The train was deadheading equipment back from La Salle Street Station to the Blue Island coach yard, just a couple minutes ahead of a regular express run.
