Old Chilean Architecture

Hi, guys

My country (Chile) belongs to the new world, but during the last two centuries had a long period of prosperity that brought many inmigrants that influenced the local architecture, and changed dramatically the bucolic spanish colonial style by something a little bit more dramatic. A lot has been lost by earthquakes that can reach biblical proportions, but a lot has been preserved and I'd like to show it to you. In this thread, I will show buildings from all the country, and from different styles. I'll try to get some information of it, also.

Ok, let's start with our presidencial palace:

Palacio de La Moneda

It was built in 1876 and opened in 1805 in Santiago. The architect was the italian Joaquín Toesca and the building was meant to be a coin factory. In 1845 became the Presidencial Palace. The style is Italian Neoclassic with Doric influence. It has three "patios" and nice rooms, which are very discrete (some would say spartan), but they reflect very well the chilean republican values. Recently, a new cultural center was added beneath the plaza.

I hope you liked it. I will be adding more buildings.

Ex-Congreso Nacional-Santiago

(Former Parliament Palace)

This wonderful palace built in neoclassical style with french influence was built between 1857 and was finished in 1870. It was designed by the french architect Claude Françoise Brunet de Baines, but he died before the building was finished. It has been repaired many times due to fires and earthquakes. Since Pinochet dictatorship, the Parliament works in an ugly building in Valparaiso. Nowadays it is used as meeting place and special ceremonies.

Museo de Bellas Artes - Santiago

(Chilean Nacional Museum of Fine Arts)

The Chilean National Museum of Fine Arts (Spanish: Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes or MNBA), located in Santiago, Chile, is one of the major centers for Chilean art and for broader South American art. Established in 1880, the organization is managed by the "Artistic Union" (Unión Artística).

The current building, the "Palace of the Fine Arts" (el Palacio de Bellas Artes), dates to 1910 and commemorates the first centennial of the Independence of Chile. It was designed by the French-Chilean architect Emile Jecquier in a full-blown Beaux-arts style and is situated in the Parque Forestal of Santiago. Behind it is located the Museum of Contemporary Art (Museo de Arte Contemporáneo) of the University of Chile, in which is also located the old School of Fine Arts (Escuela de Bellas Artes).

This wonderful palace was built in 1910 in the city of Valparaiso, to replace the former province goverment building, which was in very bad conditions after some floods and earthquakes. It has a french style, five floors and wonderful halls.

Catedral Metropolitana de Santiago

Santiago Metropolitan Cathedral

The Metropolitan Cathedral of Santiago (Spanish: Catedral Metropolitana de Santiago) is the seat of the Archbishop of Santiago de Chile, currently Ricardo Ezzati Andrello, and the center of the archdiocese of Santiago de Chile. The construction of the neoclassical cathedral began in 1748 and ended in 1800; further alterations ordered at the end of the 19th century gave it its present appearance. Previous cathedrals had been destroyed by earthquakes.

The cathedral is located in Plaza de Armas (main square) and hosts wonderful art pieces and a very stunning decoration, for chilean standards. Now it is being remodeled, due to damages during the huge earthquake that struk Chile 5 years ago.

This wonderful building hosts the third largest stoch exchange in Latin America (after Sao Paulo and Mexico DF). It was built in 1913 by the architect Emile Jecquier, in a very appealing french renaissance style. It has a triangular plan and luxurious interiors.

Good thread Marsu, there's not doubt about Santiago is one of the most beautiful and well preseved Capitals around Latin America, combining modernity and antiques in a pretty original way.

Palacio Baburizza, Valparaiso

the palace was built in 1916 by the italian architects Arnaldo Barison and Renato Schiavoni for an italian family. the Palace was bought by Pascual Baburizza, from Croatia some years later, because the italian man died, so her widow sold the place. The palace is built in Jugend style with a lot of details that make this building a masterpiece, like the tower, the croatian flag detains in the walls, the sculptures in the balconies, the dragon style of the roof, etc. Nowadays, the palace hosts the Valparaiso Art Gallery.

Biblioteca Nacional de Chile

Chile's National Library

The Biblioteca Nacional de Chile is the national library of Chile. It is located on the Avenida Libertador General Bernardo O'Higgins in Santiago, in a building completed in 1925, though its history reaches to the early nineteenth century before it was relocated to its current home. The architect of this wonderful building is Gustavo García de Postigo and the style is neoclassical with french influence. Next to the library, there is another neoclassical building: Archivo Nacional, where there is a huge collection documents and newspapers.

Unfortunately, we have lost a lot of patrimony because of the earthquakes, and also because we did not value what we had. But now, there is a new awareness and the money to preserve.
