Estación Mapocho - Santiago

Mapocho Train Station
Estación Mapocho is a former train station that since 1994 has been refitted as a cultural centre that hosts many kinds of events in Santiago de Chile

The design and construction of the station began in 1905 at the hands of Emilio Jecquier, a Chilean architect based in France. The 280 metre long, 17 metre high structure was composed of a base of masonry and a steel vault covered in glass (now copper). The steel structure was constructed by the Belgian company Haine Saint Pierre. The official inauguration of the station took place on May 12, 1912, and the station opened to the public in 1913.

In recognition of its imposing architecture and its sentimental and historic value, the building was declared a National Monument by law in 1976.

The good news is that its glorious past as a railway station are about to come back, because there are plans to make new services to Valparaiso and the north.

Edificio Correos de Chile - Santiago

Central Post Office Building

The Central Post Office Building (Spanish: Edificio del Correo Central) is a historic post office building on the northern edge of the Plaza de Armas, in Santiago, Chile. It is adjacent to the Palacio de la Real Audiencia de Santiago and is located on what was the land lot originally owned by Pedro de Valdivia and where he built his house.[1] The site also was occupied by a building that served as Presidential Palace until 1846. Construction of the current building began in 1881 and was designed by Ricardo Brown. Its current appearance dates to 1908 and has a beautiful french neoclassic style. It is a national monument.

Teatro Municipal de Santiago

Municipal Theatre
French Chilean architect Claudio Brunet des Baines was commissioned for its design, and its construction was entrusted to another French Chilean, civil engineer Felipe Charme de l´Isle. Brunet des Baines created a French Neoclassical exterior for the theater, though his 1855 death left the supervision of the design to his countryman, Lucien Henault, and to the latter's assistant, Manuel Aldunate. It has been reconstructed many times, because of fire and earthquakes.

Iglesia San Francisco - Castro

San Francisco Church - Castro

The Church of San Francisco (Spanish, Iglesia de San Francisco), located on one side of the Plaza de Armas of Castro, Chile, is the main Catholic church of Chiloé’s capital. Castro is Chile's third oldest city in continued existence.[3] It was founded in February, 1567 by Martín Ruiz de Gamboa, who was sent by his father-in-law, temporary governor of Chile Rodrigo de Quiroga, to establish a city on the Chiloé Archipelago called Santiago de Castro. That same year, a church was built with the name of the apostle James (Santiago in Spanish), which was to be used in the evangelization of the indigenous peoples of Chiloé. The church was burnt down and rebuilt a number of times until its definitive reconstruction in 1771, and used thereafter as a parish administered by the Jesuits.

The church’s design is the work of Italian architect Eduardo Provasoli, and rather than the typical style of the other churches of Chiloé, the Church of San Francisco's style is Neo-Gothic. The church was built by carpenters from Chiloé under supervision from Salvador Sierpe.

In the structures, the carpenters used wood from the area such as the alerce, cypress, coigüe and other native wood. The interiors are made of Rauli Beech and olivillo; however the facade, roof and exterior lining are sheets of galvanized iron.

Thank you for your comment. And you are welcome to visit Chile as much as you can

another building:

Palacio de los Tribunales de Justicia - Santiago

Courts of Justice Palace - Santiago

The building, which is opposite the Ex Congreso Nacional, was built in two phases between 1905 and 1930 in the neoclassical style. The earlier, the western portion of the building, was completed in 1911. The main entrance to the building is framed by a two-tiered portico that is supported by one-story-high Doric columns on the lower level and two-story-high Ionic columns on the upper level. The portico is crowned by a triangular pediment containing the figure of a condor standing on an open book with the word LEX (Latin for law) sculpted over it.

The building has a three-story arcade, which is parallel to the main facade and features a glass skylight. Ornamental details include caryatids holding bronze swords made by the sculptor Coll y Pi and a stained glass window made in Munich, Germany by Franz Mayer & Co.

It has a neoclassical style with french influence. The building was recently renovated and the compleete area surrounding the palace is being renovated.

That is a pity, but when I visited Lima, I saw a fantastic and well preserved downtown. Of course there were some places that really needed a renovation, but there is a lot of material to work. Anyway, thank you very much for the visit

Palacio Vergara - Viña del Mar

Vergara Palace - Viña del Mar

It is a beautiful Palace located at the Quinta Vergara Park, in the city center. It was built by the Vergara family to replace the family house destroyed by the earthquake of 1906. The architect is Ettore Petri, who made an exquisite venetian gothic building. Inside, the luxurious halls are furnished with rococo, Louis XVI and Empire furniture. Now it is used by the Viña del Mar town council to host the art museum, but due to the earthquake of 2010, it is closed, but there are plans to restore the place, but it costs 8 million dollars, which are being raised by the municipality.

Santiago de Chile: Metropolitan Cathedral

The Cathedral of Santiago de Chile is one of the largest catholic cathedrals in the Americas. Its length can be easily seen from the huge doors of the Plaza de Armas entrance. Like most of the cathedrals of the continent, it’s the result of the union of many buildings that were built in different historical periods. The complex is composed by the main building with the two epic frontal towers, the Parroquia del Sagrario, and the Palacio Arzobispal.
