Pilgrimage to Lourdes

Pilgrimage to Lourdes through Italy and France

From 20 to 28 svibnja 2013th year we were under the direction of the Guardian on pilgrimage to the great Marian shrine of Lourdes, which coincided with the 55th International military pilgrimage, where he attended the Croatian army, the police and we were very proud of our Zrinska Guard. This year's pilgrimage had the name "Lourdes - the door of faith"

Torino - Italy

2013.05.21 Torino by djolenovi, on Flickr

We went on a pilgrimage to Lourdes from our little town of Čakovec in Međimurje. First we stopped at Turin and see the sights of the city.

Shrine of Mary Help of Christians, Turin

The Basilica of Our Lady Help of Christians (Italian: Santuario di Maria Ausiliatrice) is a church in Turin, northern Italy. Originally part of the home for poor boys founded by John Bosco, it now contains the remains of Bosco, and 6,000 relics of other saints.

The church housing Bosco's remains was built in 1865-1868 to plans by Antonio Spezia.
Commemorative plaque for Don Bosco's mother, Mamma Margherita

According to legend, a vision of the Virgin Mary appeared in a dream to John Bosco in 1844 or 1845 and revealed the site of the martyrdom of the Turinese saints Solutor, Adventor and Octavius. The Basilica dell'Ausiliatrice was built on the site of their death. The church houses the relics of these saints.

John Bosco (Italian: Giovanni Melchiorre Bosco; 16 August 1815 – 31 January 1888), popularly known as Don Bosco, was an Italian Roman Catholic priest of the Latin Church, educator and writer of the 19th century. While working in Turin, where the population suffered many of the effects of industrialization and urbanization, he dedicated his life to the betterment and education of street children, juvenile delinquents, and other disadvantaged youth. He developed teaching methods based on love rather than punishment, a method that became known as the Salesian Preventive System. A follower of the spirituality and philosophy of Saint Francis de Sales, Bosco dedicated his works to him when he founded the Salesians of Don Bosco, based in Turin.

Piazza Castello, considered the heart of the city. The half-pedestrianized square hosts some significant buildings as Palazzo Reale (Former Savoy Royal House), the Palazzo Madama (which previously hosted the Savoy senate and, for few years, the Italian senate after the Italian unification), the former Baroque Teatro Regio di Torino (rebuilt in the 1960s in modern style, after having been destroyed by fire), and the Biblioteca Reale (Royal Library) which hosts the Leonardo da Vinci self-portrait. Piazza Castello hosts as well a Fascist era building, the Torre Littoria, a kind of skyscraper which was supposed to become the headquarters of Fascist party, although it never served as such.
