Developer seeks approval to build Ottawa's tallest tower

Quote:
The planning committee will be asked next week to approve the tallest building ever constructed in Ottawa.

At 55 storeys — or nearly 180 metres in height — the Richcraft condominium tower would soar high above Dow’s Lake and nearby Little Italy, forming part of a trio of new high-rise buildings at 845 Carling Ave.

The tower would be more than 30 metres taller that the highest building in Ottawa now, one of the Place de Ville towers on Albert Street, and ten storeys taller than the 45-floor tower Claridge has begun to build on the northeast corner of Preston and Carling.

The other two towers in the Richcraft complex would be 45 storeys (148 metres) and 18 storeys (66 metres) tall.

Designed by Toronto-based architects Graziani and Corazza, the three buildings would have a total of 1,120 units and ground floor commercial space, as well as a large plaza area that would be accessible to the public.

In exchange for allowing the added height and density beyond levels permitted by the current zoning, the city would receive nearly $3.4 million from the developer for “community benefits,” in keeping with the province’s Planning Act.

Those benefits include money to redesign portions of nearby Adeline and Sidney streets, bury hydro lines, incorporate access to the O-Train station at Carling and contribute to the construction of the Hickory Street bridge — all projects in the neighbourhood.

The Sky's OK with Ottawa city council

City council approved a plan on Wednesday to build Ottawa’s tallest building.

Richcraft proposes to build a trio of towers at 845 Carling Ave., just west of Preston Street. The tallest, at 55 storeys, will soar over Dow’s Lake and Little Italy, as will a second tower at 45 storeys. A third tower is slated to be 18 storeys.
