STOCKHOLM | Stockholm Royal Seaport | U/C

Norra Djurgårdsstaden or, officially, Stockholm Royal Seaport in English is a large area of central Stockholm that is undergoing brownfield redevelopment. The area consists of former harbours and industries. 10,000 dwellings and 30,000 workplaces will be developed in the area up to 2025. The project is a part of the Clinton Climate Initiative.

Information from Stockholm City webpage:

Sweden’s largest city district is to be developed in central Stockholm over the coming years. It stretches from Hjorthagen in the north, through the port area, to Loudden in the south. This urban development contains plans for 12,000 new residences and 35,000 new workspaces and can be compared with other European urban development projects, such as those in Copenhagen, Oslo and Hamburg. Planning work started in the early 2000s and the new city district is fully developed around 2030. Stockholm Royal Seaport is also one of Stockholm’s three urban development areas with a strong environmental profile.

The vision for the urban development area:

The area incorporates three districts; Hjorthagen in the north (seen to the right in the picture above), the ports in the centre, and Loudden in the south (seen to the left).

These areas will be developed to offer a wide variety of jobs, housing, transportation, education, public and commercial services, cultural events and entertainment.

Indeed. It is one of the brownfield areas in the inner city that is being redeveloped into an attractive and diverse district.

Kolkajen/Royal Neighbour

The winners of the architecture competition ADEPT och Mandaworks worked together with the representatives of Stockholm city and have recently announced the plan of development for the Kolkajen area in Norra Djurgårdsstaden.
According to the proposal "Royal Neighbour", the future Kolkajen will consist of three different areas with their own unique character and identity.
The northernmost part of Kolkajen will be constructed on the artificial land (an island), while the southern part of the area will consist of
Some higher buildings will be constructed near the waterfront.
The infrastructure and street network is designed with the priority for the 'light means of transportation'.
According to the plan, there should be 2 000 new apartments and 70 000 sq.m. for retail space built in Kolkajen area.
The construction of the first stage of the project (Etapp 1) is scheduled for the year 2017.

Quote:
ADEPT and Mandaworks are now officially announced winners of the large urban development of Kolkajen-Ropsten in Stockholm’s Royal Seaport, Sweden. The Jury appointed the proposal, ’Royal Neighbour’ as the winner of the parallel assignment on basis of it’s high architectural and urban qualities.Since summer 2014, the team has worked closely with the city of Stockholm to develop the masterplan. The ambitious phase 1 will commence building in 2017.
‘Royal Neighbour’ is situated on the shoreline of Stockholm’s Royal Seaport, one of Northern Europe’s largest urban development areas. Over the next 20 years the Seaport will house over 12,000 new homes and 35,000 new jobs, as well as the creation of a new cultural area, the Stockholm Gasworks.

Nice stuff! Seems some of them are eco-buildings. Looks like it'll be a lively district there.

It's a nice area development, and it will be a nice addition to Stockholm, more variation in height to the buildings and blocks would make it more dynamic and interesting for the eye, but on the whole, I really like it.

Another thing I don't get is of course why every single developer in this country insist on not having closed in yards, like you got in older areas.

The same thing bugs me in Helsinki. It's gotten better though, but they're still building blocks that are semi-open, instead of good old perimeter blocks. Resulting in a restless and incoherent cityscape.
