Anyone else think 30 HY would look better without the observation deck? It looks kind of like a penguin at this angle.

Where'd Stern's buildings (the two planned for the southeast corner) go? They ought to be included- if only for the sake of some diversity. Having everything be glass, glass, and more glass simply becomes unappealing after so long, and it's the contrast between various textures and sizes that gives New York's skyline its special character. These renders look a bit too Dubai or Moscow IBC for my taste. Indeed, while I loathe buildings that are plain boxes or stacks of boxes, these buildings and their curves, swoops, and angles look somewhat more... exotic than best suits New York. Some of those things taken separately can be quite nice but all at once... well let's just hope the designs are more refined when they actually are designed. The angles, however, are in fact quite native to New York:

it looks like they replaced Stern's visions with those towers with the glass and stone combination facade - which was something David Childs/SOM planned for 35 Hudson Yards.

They should make all the designs for phase 2 be all the past designs for 35 HY. You'll have plenty of choices.

I hope for more than just glass.

I think it's a great observation, but not only the observation deck should stay, I think this building should be christened 'The Penguin'. It'd adorable.

From an aesthetic standpoint I agree to a certain extent. From an engineering standpoint the deck is awesome!

And let's not forget the financial standpoint

Some estimate that half the value of the Empire State Building comes from its hugely profitable observation deck alone. I wonder what is going to happen to that cash cow as 1WTC, 30HY and who knows how many more line up to take a share of the tourist pie.

Absolutely. Also, I thought that the towers in the park model had been discredited by now.

There are some obvious constraints with building over rail yards, but it must be possible to design something that fits in with New York: clear block alignment, with sidewalks and facades up to a shared lot line.

And as for inspiration on how to make buildings that fit in and look amazing: the unapologetically rectangular Starrett-Lehigh sits just across from the yards, in the foreground in that picture.

I linked.... I wasn't impressed by the Starrett- Leigh building. You may think it's not quite right for New York.. you have a right to that opinion. And it well may be the towers get completely re-designed, Related is known for its fickle tastes with the umpteen redesign of Equinox and its dramatic deletion of the signature corset middle from the Culture Tower. Who's to say what fits and doesn't fit in 21st century New York? I love the angles, curves, the daring of these designs and I hope the ultimate design of Phase 11 isn't a vision of what Manhattan should look like frozen in the 20th century, and looks more like the bolder envisioning of these early renders.

I was going to make an "Asia called, they want their buildings back" joke but on second thought the variation would be nice in NY. Although I'm sure those are placeholders.

This is certainly a better design than the last.

Then I suggest you never visit the rest of Manhattan. These towers may be tall, but they are spaced well apart compared to just about any other neighborhood on the island.

His comment was a dead give away he doesn't know anything about Manhattan.

I like the whole Hudson Yards project. It's a tall city within a city thoughtfully outfitted with a mix of office, residential, retail, plaza's and parks. It give s this newly created submarket which is probably bigger than boston or other cities as a whole it's own identity and character within Manhattan which I really dig.

Phase 2 will look less out of place with the completion of dense phase 1, HY Boulevard towers and Manhattan West developments.

Has phase two always been part of the plan? This is the first time I have seen any of this.
