RICHMOND | 111 South 6th Street | 126m | 413ft | 20 fl | U/C

This made the news this month causing excitement in a few different Richmond threads but I don't think it has a thread outside of the regional forums. I've spent plenty of time in Richmond so news of a possibly iconic tower for the city has me excited as well.

Dominion Plans Addition to Richmond's skyline

Dominion’s 21-story One James River Plaza office tower on East Cary Street, as seen from the air. The six-story Richmond Plaza office building (left of the office tower) will be demolished.
Quote:
Dominion Resources Inc., the Richmond-based energy conglomerate, plans to demolish a downtown office building it bought four years ago and replace it with a new tower that will “enhance” the city’s skyline.

The Richmond Plaza office building
on Cary Street, across Seventh Street from Dominion’s 21-story One James River Plaza office tower, will start coming down within a year, said Carter Reid, Dominion’s senior vice president, chief administrative and compliance officer and corporate secretary.
The yet-to-be-designed building will include underground parking, office and retail space along with public areas, Reid said. While demolition should start during the next 12 months, she said, there’s no timeline for erecting the new building, or any estimate of how tall it might rise.

Richmond's downtown covers a sizable area but lacks height. Only a few towers exceed 100m.

unfortunately, this project will likely not reach our 100 meter highrise standard. The development is still good news, even if the height is somewhat disappointing.

Dominion plans to build 20-story office tower in downtown and possibly a second one

Quote:

Dominion Resources Inc. plans to tear down a six-story office structure — the Richmond Plaza building at 111 S. Sixth St. — and construct a 20-story office tower in its place.

Demolition is expected to start in late June and take four months. Construction on the new building is targeted for completion in early 2019.
[...]
If the second building is constructed, it would be 850,000 square feet and 16 stories tall, Frazier said. An auditorium would be built on the property, and a connector would go over South Seventh Street.
[...]
there is a silver lining, however. Perhaps a new, tall highrise could be in Richmond's near future:

Quote:
[...]

A decision about what will happen to the nearby One James River Plaza, where Dominion Virginia Power operates, will be made in 2019, company spokesman C. Ryan Frazier said.

That 21-story building at 701 E. Cary St. either will be gutted and renovated or a new tower will be built in its place, Frazier said.

This tower is supposed to be 413'. I believe that makes the 100m qualification. It does seem quite tall for a 20 story building but that is what the article says it will be at.

Glass seems an alright choice there, but I'd prefer different heights, shapes and materials for both towers not looking like twins too much. A bit more height and actual soaring designs (setbacks, setbacks) would help heaps, anyway.

U/C. Also some news for tower two - it seems the current Dominion Headquarters will be demo'd to make way for it. +New rendering. These towers will be fantastic for RVA.

Currently under construction, the phase one 20-story Tower One will be approximately 1 million square feet and occupy a full city block. It will include a high-performance workplace for over 1,000 employees, street level retail, employee amenities and parking. If approved, the second phase’s 16-story Tower Two will replace Dominion’s existing offices at One James River Plaza.

Also “huge for downtown” is Dominion Resources Inc.’s office tower going up at South Sixth and East Cary streets, Meade said. The 20-story office building is targeted for completion in early 2019.
Speaker Roy Grier with Dominion said a second tower that will connect with the first one is not officially approved at this time, but is likely to proceed and the targeted opening is 2022.
