Paris-Wuhan flight launched during "French Week"

WUHAN, April 12 (Xinhua) -- Air France-KLM on Thursday claimed to have become the first passenger airline to link China's central heartland with Europe, as it launched a service between Paris and Wuhan.

An Air France-KLM Boeing 777-200 ER aircraft will fly the route three times a week. A one-way trip takes about 11 and a half hours, bringing Europe closer to central China, according to Peng Jun, an official with the municipal transport committee.

By the end of 2011, Wuhan had been linked to 11 cities outside the Chinese mainland by air. The city will benefit from at least eight more international routes this year, including one to the United States, Peng and other officials added.

The number of international destinations that can be reached by air from Wuhan will further increase to 40 by 2030, making the city China's fourth-largest air transport hub after Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, they said.

Thursday's launch is one of the events marking "French Week," held in Wuhan from April 12 to 18 to promote cooperation on trade, education, science and technology. Wuhan is a top choice for French investors in China.

Other events include launching a bio-science center, hosting a transportation symposium, a genetic science workshop, a French singing competition, French wine promotions, food and arts festivals.

Air France-KLM eyes Asia amid losses in Europe
(WCARN.com, June 20)

Quote:
The booming Asia-Pacific market is offering a ray of sunshine for Air France-KLM, Europe's largest airline group by revenue, as it grapples with the eurozone debt crisis.

While the situation in Europe remains difficult for the airline industry, the Franco-Dutch carrier is looking to emerging markets as a source of fast growth that could help compensate for its losses in Europe.

Marnix Fruitema, senior vice-president of Air France-KLM for Asia-Pacific, said the airline "will continue to see double-digit growth in the Asia-Pacific".

Air France-KLM reported revenue of EUR5.7 billion (US$7.6 billion) in the first quarter of this year. However, the company suffered a worse-than-expected operating loss of EUR597 million during the period, compared to EUR403 million in the same period last year.

"Despite the dark clouds in Europe, we see a ray of sunshine in the Asia-Pacific that has strong growth potential," Fruitema said.

One of the fastest-growing traffic streams of Air France-KLM is its flights between China and Latin America, thanks to active business and investment activities between the two regions, according to Fruitema.

While battling surging fuel, labor, distribution and airport costs, Fruitema said the airline will continue investing in key markets and will explore opportunities to add more destinations in China.

Intensifying partnerships with Chinese airlines and growing the airline's overall capacity are essential to ensure growth in the Chinese market, he said.

In the meantime, Air France-KLM is also boosting its effort to improve services and ground products by hiring Chinese-speaking employees and offering the Chinese language on airports' self check-in machines, and a Chinese entertainment program on board.

KLM recently named its Boeing 777-300 aircraft after the Wolong National Nature Reserve in Southwest China's Sichuan province. The move illustrated the growth potential the airline sees in second-tier Chinese cities such as Chengdu, capital of Sichuan.

Growth in emerging economies is the most important part of KLM's international business, KLM President and CEO Peter Hartman said, adding that China will evolve into KLM's largest international market in five years.

The Franco-Dutch airline group is currently serving nine destinations in China, and it was the first European airline to offer direct flights between Wuhan, capital of Hubei province, and Europe in April.

The International Air Transport Association recently predicted that the global airline business will make just US$3 billion in profits this year, while European carriers are expected to suffer losses of US$1.1 billion.

Industry analysts said that European airlines will need to double their revenues in emerging economies in order to offset their losses in developed markets.

Subtle Blends of Flavours designed by Guy Martin in Air France cabin as from June 1
(WCARN.com/Air France-KLM Group PR, June 1)

Quote:
Starting from June 1st, customers in Business Class on Air France will, on all long-haul flights from Paris-Charles de Gaulle, be able to enjoy exclusive signature dishes designed by Guy Martin, Michelin-starred chef at the Grand Véfour restaurant.

Memories of holidays, colours and scents have inspired Guy Martin to come up with classic and inventive recipes. Air France can now exclusively reveal these dishes, subtle blends of flavours for an original and contemporary culinary experience on board:

Sautéed shrimp, pasta shells and zucchini caviar, coconut sauce enhanced by Espelette chili pepper; Orecchiette pasta with calamari and arugula served over tomato sauce with coriander; Orecchiette Sautéed chicken with orange and maniguette pepper, endive and pearl onions;
Breast of duckling, and a fennel and mango compote.

Guy Martin has been designing dishes and menus for the Air France First class cabin since 2002. The dishes created for the Business cabin will be on offer for a period of eight months.

To ensure frequent travellers can enjoy a variety of dishes, these culinary delights will be renewed twice a month. This exceptional offer follows on from the dishes designed by Johe Robuchon, which have been on offer since late 2011 and which have been highly popular among passengers.

" With its full sleep seat, onboard service and redesigned cuisine, Air France is constantly renewing its offer in the Business cabin to ensure passengers enjoy a exceptional moment of serenity and relaxation. These exclusive signature dishes by master chefs have met with real success with our customers and provide them with new surprises every day" stated Christian Herzog, SVP Marketing at Air France KLM.

To extend the culinary experience, passengers will be able to watch the TV programme by TV5MONDE called "Epicerie Fine", on board as from June 1st, presented by master chef Guy Martin. Each episode features the discovery of culinary delights and flagship dishes of French cuisine. Tricastin black truffle, Sisteron lamb and Beaufort cheese from Savoie are just a few examples of the delights featured in these programmes combining cuisine and culture.

The Culinary Delights Designed by a Master Chef

(1) Sautéed shrimp, pasta shells and zucchini caviar, coconut sauce enhanced by Espelette chilli pepper

The shrimp are lightly sautéed in olive oil, accompanied by flavourful pasta shells with Indian saffron and coconut-lime sauce with a touch of Espelette chilli pepper and cumin. Served with zucchini caviar with cashew nuts, this dish is my contribution to the tropical islands.

(2) Orecchiette pasta with calamari and arugula served over tomato sauce with coriander

Orecchiette pasta with calamari and Italian parsley is presented over a light tomato sauce flavoured with coriander.

The spicy taste of arugula enlivens the dish, along with a flavourful garnish of finely shaved parmesan cheese.

(3) Sautéed chicken with orange and maniguette pepper, endive and pearl onions

A delicious breast of chicken gently cooked in chicken broth is flavoured with orange. Maniguette pepper, also called "paradise seed" or "Guinea pepper," enhances the dish with its sweet piquancy.

This dish is accompanied by endive braised slowly in orange juice and by tender pearl onions.

(4) Breast of duckling, and a fennel and mango compote

Tender roasted breast of duckling is served with a delicate jus flavoured with fennel seed, in Provencale style. Mangos gently cooked with cider vinegar and acacia honey bring a sweet-and-sour touch to the dish, which is also enhanced by the liquorice notes of fennel.

Flying Blue offers new benefits for its members
(WCARN.com/Air France-KLM Group PR, June 15)

Quote:
As from June 2012, Flying Blue, Europe's leading frequent flyer programme with 21 million members, is making its offer more attractive by offering a higher number of seats for award tickets on the Air France and KLM European network and increasing the options of earning miles.

"Air France has undertaken a transformation plan in which Flying Blue is a strategic driver enabling the company to become the reference in customer service by 2015. These major improvements are accessible to all members" stated Christian Herzog, SVP Marketing Air France and KLM.

Even More Seats Available for Award Tickets

Air France KLM now offers an additional number of seats on flights serving its European network with access to two new classes for booking award tickets. Award tickets represent on average 4% of available capacity, i.e. 13 Airbus A380s per day.

With the Flex awards, Air France KLM also allows members to enjoy greater travel flexibility.

Major Innovations Requested by Customers

After conducting several different surveys with its Flying Blue members and customers, Air France KLM has introduced some major innovations:

1). the amount of the fuel surcharge is now directly included in the cost of miles when purchasing award tickets for medium-haul flights. Only the airport taxes have to be paid separately.

2). customers retain their Elite (Silver, Gold, Platinum) status more easily: all status miles in excess of the customer's current card threshold level are automatically carried over from one year to the next.

Flying Blue Store, an Online Store for Earning and Using Miles

Since April 2012, the Flying Blue Store, a real online shop dedicated to Flying Blue members has been accessible on the www.flyingbluenews.com site. It notably allows:

1). to purchase awards with 31 airlines and over 100 non-airline partners: Hertz, Avis, Sixt, Best Western, Hilton, UGC, resort car hire, etc.

2). to earn miles with some one hundred partners (Amex, Accor for
example) by making purchases with brands recommended by Flying Blue members which offer travel, design, art and decoration-related items such as Galeries Lafayette, Zara, Adidas, iTunes, FNAC.com, Fauchon and Lavazza, to benefit from promotional awards regularly published on the site.
*including North Africa and Israel

Flying Blue in Figures

1). Europe's leading frequent flyer programme with 21 million members in 2012.

2). 2/3 of members are international.

3). Miles are valid for life providing that customers travel once every twenty months or pay for their purchases with the Flying Blue American Express card.

4). Award tickets represent on average 4% of available capacity, i.e. 13 Airbus A380s per day.

5). 31 airlines and over 100 non-airline partners.

6). Four levels: Ivory, Silver, Gold and Platinum.

Flying Blue is the frequent flyer programme of Air France and KLM, Tarom, Kenya Airways, Air Europa and Air Calin.

Final report due on deadly 2009 Air France crash
(WCARN.com, May 30)

Quote:
French investigators say the final report into the causes of the crash of Air France flight 447 will soon be published, three years after the jet went down in the mid-Atlantic killing all 228 people aboard.

France's accident investigation agency, or BEA, said in a statement Wednesday that the final report will be released at a news conference on July 5.

A preliminary report released last July highlighted a chaotic cockpit scenario before the crash, with a confused crew getting incoherent speed readings from faulty sensors, but it didn't draw a conclusion on whether pilot error, equipment failure or other unknown factors caused the crash.

The Airbus 330 passenger jet flying from Rio de Janeiro to Paris crashed on June 1, 2009.

Air France to cut 5,122 posts to bolster profit
(Shanghai Daily/Xinhua, June 22)

Quote:
PARIS, June 21 (Xinhua) -- Europe's leading airline Air France-KLM announced on Thursday its plan to lay off 5,122 employees out of 49,301 staff of Air France by 2013, but not in a compulsory way.

With the aim to cut the group's 2-billion-euro net debt (2.53 billion U.S. dollars) and boost profitability, the Franco-Dutch firm estimated 1,712 not replaced natural departures over the period with the residual number of excess staff expected at 3,410 posts at the end of 2013, it said in a statement posted on its website.

"If the agreements are signed, the accompanying measures to reduce staff numbers will exclude the use of forced departures before the end of 2013," the group noted.

Facing a challenging business climate, Air France-KLM wants to restore competitiveness through cost-cutting, restructuring the short- and medium-haul operations as well as debt reduction.

"By the end of 2014, the company aims to increase economic efficiency by 20 percent by limiting changes to the payroll and by increasing the efficiency of time worked, by not replacing staff who leave and by improving processes," the company said. (1 euro = 1.267 U.S dollar)
