Here's a recently anounced project, the project is being led by the owner of Bern's steakhouse. A steakhouse which is consistantly in the top 3 in the U.S.A. This will be located in the South Howard district of Tampa.

The Epicurean - 5 stories, 75 rooms/units, site prep, completiong late 2008

A hotel built for your palate

For now, it's a dusty construction lot on S Howard Avenue.

But by the end of 2008, it'll be The Epicurean Hotel, a 75-room boutique hotel that will include a rooftop pool and bar, a spa and a parking garage.

On Sunday, Bern's Steak House owner David Laxer unveiled plans for the luxury condominium hotel project four years in the making that his family will open across the street from their restaurant.

With a focus on food, the hotel will feature upscale wine and cooking demonstrations, classes and wine tastings at the Bern Laxer School of Food and Wine.

It will also feature a new 18, 000-square-foot signature restaurant that will serve hotel and local guests from breakfast into the late night.

Chef partner Jeannie Pierola didn't reveal a lot about the restaurant, except to say it will have a very different approach.

Bern's Fine Wine and Spirits, now located down the street from the steak house, will expand into a new 9, 000 square foot location in the hotel that will house guest wine lockers and storage.

"I don't think there's anything in the country like this, " Laxer said.

Update: the Tampa Bay Business Journal had more information:

Urban Studio Architects, Smith & Associates Real Estate and Coral Hospitality are working with Bern's on the new property. Urban Studio Architects provided design services, and Smith & Associates is responsible for selling the suites.

Coral Hospitality is providing technical services and consulting during the pre-opening stages and then will provide hotel management services after the opening, scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2008.

The hotel will house a restaurant and an expanded Bern's Fine Wines & Spirits shop that includes wine storage for guests. Suite will have between 365 and 800 square feet and will be priced in the mid-$200,000s.

Amenities include 24-hour room service, wireless Internet service, flat-screen satellite television, bar service at the rooftop pool, workout facilities, full-service day spa and business meeting space. Additionally, guests may attend educational seminars in a culinary and wine classroom.

Depends. It's stepped. Needless to say, Tampa Tower is having a fun time with the FAA over its height, which isn't even dramatic.

Trump was forced to drop two feet (yes, two feet) because it scratched the limit on the south side of the CBD, yet it is less than 600 ft. Projects in between the CBD and Channel District face very stringent restrictions thanks to the GA field on the southern tip of Davis Islands.

Tampa Museum Design Unveiled
Posted May 10, 2007 by The Tampa Tribune
Updated May 10, 2007 at 11:23 PM

As architect Stanley Saitowitz unveiled his designs for a new Tampa Museum of Art, the excitement in the board room was palpable.

For good reason: The moment was seven years in the making.

For an hour Thursday afternoon, all of the turmoil – the fundraising troubles, the arguments between the mayor and museum leaders, the doubts about whether a new building ever would be built – seemed to dissolve.

All eyes focused on Saitowitz – the architect from California - and his designs for a new building along the Hillsborough River, at the northern edge of Curtis Hixon Park.

Just before Saitowitz began his presentation, museum board Chairwoman Cornelia Corbett set the tone.

“It’s kind of a big moment,” she said.

Saitowitz explained his vision to museum officials: a building that complements the water, is modern and features garden space, including an interior courtyard that opens to the sky.

He said he envisions the new museum to be 58-feet tall, the same height as the adjacent Poe parking garage.

It will be divided among two buildings: One building will be two stories, with a spacious lobby and a museum store at the bottom level. The lobby will be transparent and looks out to the river, the University of Tampa and the Tampa Bay Performing Art Center.

The upper level will be devoted to gallery space, featuring polished stone floors, white walls and a glass ceiling with track lighting.

A separate gallery will be devoted to the museum’s glass collection.

The second building, which will be three stories, will include shipping and receiving areas; storage and exhibition preparation rooms; and administrative offices.

An outdoor sculpture garden overlooks the river.

Saitowitz became animated as he talked about the potential for the roof.

“It would be a really amazing party space,” Saitowitz said. “It’s just such an amazing prospect.”

The rooftop will be considered a “green” roof, meaning it will be environmentally friendly and flush with plants.

The exterior of the building would be wrapped in expanded metal. Fiber optic lights will be embedded between the layers.

The lights could be programmed to change color. Or an artist could work with them to create a design.

“I wanted to make this a wall of intrigue and discovery,” Saitowitz said.

Those in attendance clearly were awed.

“You have blown me out of the water,” museum board member Sara Richter told the architect. “This was worth waiting for.”

The museum hopes to raise $25 million within the next two years. Museum officials will not say how much they have raised, but records reviewed by the Tribune last month showed they have pledges for $5.1 million and $1.7 million in cash.

The city will contribute $17.5 million in Community Investment Tax money.

Plans call for the architect to design a 120,000-square-foot building, spread over two phases. The buildings for the first phase unveiled Thursday were a combined 68,000 square feet.

The museum has money for about 50,000 square feet, Corbett said, but hopes to raise enough to build the full 120,000 square feet some day.

“We are achieving that vision,” Corbett said. “We will build what we can afford, no more, no less.”

After Saitowitz’s presentation, the museum’s building committee burst into applause. The group then unanimously passed a motion endorsing the designs, which preceded another round of applause.

Corbett threw her arms into the air and shouted “Woo!”

Does anyone know the status for seaboard square? Is that the development just north of Grand Central? I haven't been back to tampa for awhile but last time I was there, they were doing work on that piece of property. Also is anyone going to be taking a pics of that area please let me know. I am excited to go back to tampa the last week of june and see all the construction in the channelside area close to completion

^Seaboard Sqaure is the development just north of the Towers at Channelside, near the Southern end of the deistrict. A few months back the developer anounced that th hotel and one condo building may begin construction as early as September.

Now you may have Seaboard Sqaure confused with Seaport which is just 2 blocks north of Grand Central. That project has its first building U/C on the 3rd floor.

For pictures check out the Tampa Photos Thread, there are lots of pics there.

Courtney Campbell Soon May Be Puttin' On The Ritz
Skip directly to the full story.
By ELLEN GEDALIUS The Tampa Tribune

Published: May 26, 2007

TAMPA - Plans are under way to bring a Ritz-Carlton hotel to the shores beside the Courtney Campbell Parkway.

Developers hope it becomes the area's first five-star hotel.

Clearwater-based developers Orion Communities and RPS LLC are in the final stages of negotiations with the hotel chain, said Sandip Patel, president and chief executive of the development companies.

He hopes to reach an agreement within the next two months, break ground on the 6-acre parcel in early 2008 and open in October 2010.

"It's just going to be the showpiece for the city," Patel said

A Ritz-Carlton official would not discuss the deal other than to say no contract had been signed.

If the plans go through, the Radisson Bay Harbor hotel will be torn down to make room for the new development, said John Grandoff, an attorney for the developer.

Plans call for two 220-foot towers on the Courtney Campbell at Rocky Point Drive. One tower will have 274 hotel rooms and 48 residential units.

The second tower will have 136 condo units.

"Some people want to live at the Ritz," Grandoff said.

The hotel will include a restaurant and boutique retail shops, such as a jewelry and clothing stores. It also will feature boat docks, but those will be accessible only to condominium dwellers.

Building the dock requires approval from the Tampa Port Authority.

The hotel will be close to Rocky Point's bars and restaurants. Several other hotel and condo projects are in the area as well.

The development team debuted plans at a city council meeting Thursday night; those plans were well-received, Councilman John Dingfelder said.

"Between Ikea and Ritz-Carlton, it was definitely a good evening for Tampa and putting Tampa back on the map," Dingfelder said Friday.

Mark Huey, the city's economic development administrator, said he had been trying for years to bring a Ritz-Carlton to Tampa.

"This is the closest a Ritz-Carlton deal has come," Huey said. "Of all the five-star hotels, they have the strongest brand identity. That's something our community has lacked."

Huey said he hopes having a five-star hotel in Tampa will help the city land more national conventions and other large events.

The city council is expected to give preliminary approval to the project June 14.

Researcher Catherine Hammer contributed to this story. Reporter Ellen Gedalius can be reached at egedalius@tampatrib.com or (813) 259-7679.
