REPORT | Flying the World: RGN-NYU

I've read that getting domestic plane tickets in Myanmar is a manual affair, going to the office upon arrival in the country and getting a paper ticket. Air KBZ bucked the trend and offered ticketing online, and also credit card payment. The airport check-in process is still stuck in antiquity though, but at least was speedy.

There are no names on your boarding pass.

Instead, you get a sticker to identify which airline you are with today. All passengers were crowded into the small lounge for boarding by bus.

For urgent final call, an agent would carry a placard around the room with the flight number. You really have gone back in time.

Today's flight would be on a new ATR jet. Despite an airport from ancient times, I get to fly on a modern aircraft!

It only takes 1.5 hours to fly to Bagan. A light snack was served, which was much needed for the early morning departure.

Bagan's airport was deserted, and we soon descended down the stairs at the back for the bus into the terminal. The bus is a 2nd=hand. You can still see the foreign language signs inside.

In these relatively quiet airports, you are land-side and ready for taxi pick-up minutes after arrival.

With decent service, full safety demonstration on board, and a light snack for a short flight, flying domestic in Myanmar did not seem bad at all. I noticed most of the passengers at the airport were foreigners. Perhaps flying is still too expensive relative to local incomes.
