NAIA to Be Converted, to Host First Philippine Grand Prix in 2015

http://www.autoindustriya.com/auto-i...x-in-2015.html

NAIA General Manager Jun Diaz was tasked for the initial conversion of the runway into a world-class F1 track to be named the Ninoy Aquino International Circuit. The NAIA Terminal 1 complex and the Old Domestic Terminal will become the paddocks and the grandstands, respectively.Speaking exclusively to AutoIndustriya this morning, April 1, 2014, Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda, told us about the 19-month ordeal the president went through with the mercurial F1 Supremo Bernie Ecclestone to achieve this.

NAIA General Manager Jose Angel Honrado has quietly worked on assessing and planning the necessary steps in order for flights, domestic and international, to be handled by Clark International Airport. The so-called ‘rehabilitation’ of NAIA 1 is basically Phase 1 of converting the NAIA complex to host the Philippine Grand PrixHermann Tilke was hired to design the layout of the track, and rumor has it that he will be in town by mid-2014 to personally inspect the venue and handle the construction himself.

http://www.rappler.com/business/5475...-3-apec-summit

Published 7:27 PM, Apr 05, 2014

MANILA, Philippines – A special lounge for dignitaries will be constructed at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 in time to welcome guests of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit to be hosted by the Philippines next year. The government will spend a total of P10.32 million for the project which will be bidded out to qualified contractors.According to the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA), those interested in bidding can inspect the site reserved for the lounge on April 11. They should submit their bids and eligibility documents on April 30.All foreign airlines have been asked by the Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC) to move to NAIA 3 in order to decongest NAIA 1 which has had to handle 7 to 8 million people compared to its original capacity of 4 to 4.5 million.

So far, only Delta Airlines has agreed to transfer its operations to NAIA 3.NAIA 3 is undergoing retrofitting and rehabilitation costing P1.9 billion. The overhaul, being carried out by Japanese company Takenaka Corporation, is expected to be completed by July. This is one month ahead of its original August deadline. The rehabilitation works at Terminal 3 include baggage handling, flight information displays, computer terminals, gate coordination, and fire protection systems. The goal is to improve the experience of passeners flying in and out of Manila, among others, to allow a faster and more pleasant experience for passengers flying in and out of Manila.

Press Release – FAA Announces the Republic of the Philippines Aviation Safety Rating Upgrade to Category 1

http://www.faa.gov/news/press_releas...m?newsId=16114

April 9, 2014
Contact: Alison Duquette or Les Dorr
Phone: (202) 267-3883

WASHINGTON– The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) today announced that the Republic of the Philippines complies with international safety standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and has been granted a Category 1 rating. The country previously held a Category 1 rating until January 2008, when it was downgraded to a Category 2. A Category 2 rating means a country either lacks laws or regulations necessary to oversee air carriers in accordance with minimum international standards, or that its civil aviation authority – equivalent to the FAA for aviation safety matters – is deficient in one or more areas, such as technical expertise, trained personnel, record keeping or inspection procedures.

The return to Category 1 status is based on a March 2014 FAA review of the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines. A Category 1 rating means the country’s civil aviation authority complies with ICAO standards. With the International Aviation Safety Assessment (IASA) Category 1 rating, the Republic of the Philippines’ air carriers can add flights and service to the United States and carry the code of U.S. carriers. As part of the FAA’s IASA program, the agency assesses the civil aviation authorities of all countries with air carriers that have applied to fly to the United States, currently conduct operations to the United States or participate in code sharing arrangements with U.S. partner airlines and makes that information available to the public. The assessments determine whether or not foreign civil aviation authorities are meeting ICAO safety standards, not FAA regulations.

BOC Scraps Customs Declaration Forms for Inbound Passengers

http://balita.ph/2014/04/18/boc-scra...nd-passengers/

April 18, 2014 9:00 am

MANILA, April 17 — Arriving passengers on international flights at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminals 1, 2 and 3 and Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA) are no longer required to fill-up the Customs Declaration Form if they carry only goods that are duty-free.Customs Commissioner John Sevilla issued Customs Administrative Order (CAO) 02-2014, or the Simplified Procedures for Clearance of Baggage of Passengers and Crew of International Airlines Arriving in International Airports of Entry, which aims to simplify customs procedures for international airline passengers. The new order, which took effect on Wednesday, April 16, where inbound passengers will select one of two channels or lanes—red or green. The Green lane is for those with “Nothing to Declare,” meaning they do not have items in their baggage that are subject to duties and taxes, can be brought-in duty-free and are not subject to any import prohibition, regulation or restriction. Those in the green channel or lane are not required to fill-up a Customs Declaration Form. The same rules will apply to the crew of international airlines and duly-acknowledged members of the Diplomatic Corps, though the latter will continue to enjoy privileges previously accorded to them.On the other hand, the Red lane is for passengers who bring-in goods that are subject to import duties or taxes, are above the exempted Customs limits, or are prohibited, controlled or regulated by several statues.

PASSENGERS traveling via Philippine Airlines (PAL) at the NAIA Terminal 2 may now enjoy an added treat. Fr. Modesto Teston, parish priest of Our Lady of the Airways, when it was formally opened last April 25.Apart from photos taken of the Pope, also on display at the said exhibit up to the end of May are memorabilia such as utensils, glass, pillow and blanket used by the Pope during the flight.PAL encouraged those who have access, including passengers, to visit the exhibit for free. 5 Foreign Airlines to Operate in NAIA 3 by August

http://www.rappler.com/business/indu...e-naia3-august

Published 6:23 PM, May 04, 2014

MANILA, Philippines – Upon the completion of an ongoing P1.9 billion ($42.7 million) rehabilitation project, five international airlines will transfer their operations to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport terminal 3 (NAIA 3) by August 2014, Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) Undersecretary Jose Perpetuo Lotilla said. The 5 airlines expected to transfer from terminal 1 – Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Emirates, KLM, and Delta Airlines – will increase the number of foreign airlines operating in NAIA 3 to six, joining All Nippon Airways (ANA) which operates in the terminal building.Lotilla noted that the NAIA 3 rehabilitation project, undertaken by the Takenaka Corporation of Japan, is already 62% complete. The project is expected to be done in July, ahead of the initial August schedule.

The objective of the rehabilitation of NAIA 1 and NAIA 3 is to lessen the passengers in the old airport from the current 8 million to its original design capacity of 4 to 4.5 million passengers.“We will be reducing the number of users of NAIA1 from the present eight million so it will now be back to its rated capacity of 4.5 million,” Lotilla explained. The facilities and services being rehabilitated in NAIA 3 include gate coordination, baggage handling, computer terminals, flight information displays, and fire protection systems that will allow a faster and more pleasant experience for passengers flying in and out of Manila.Lotilla also said that the P1.3 billion rehabilitation of NAIA 1 – by construction giant DM Consunji Inc (DMCI) – will be completed as scheduled by January 2015, in time for the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit.

NAIA1 Immigration Counters Augmented

http://www.interaksyon.com/article/8...ters-augmented

By: Eric B. Apolonio, InterAksyon.com
May 16, 2014 4:44 AM

MANILA, Philippines -- In an effort to reduce the queuing of arriving passengers at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) terminal 1 during peak hours, airport officials have put up seven immigration counters with four immigration officers (IOs) each to hasten the entry of the travellers into the country.Whereas before there were only two IOs per counter catering to the arriving passengers, now there are four IOs per counter serving the needs of weary travellers especially during the peak hours from 8am to 12 noon, from 3pm to 6pm and from 9pm to 12 midnight, said NAIA terminal 1 manager Dante Basanta of the new scheme in cooperation with the Bureau of Immigration.

Basanta added that there are about five to seven different flights arriving during the morning peak hours in a span of 30 to 40 minutes mostly from Hong Kong, Korea, Singapore and Taiwan. The afternoon arrivals are mostly coming from the Middle East while the night flights carry passengers coming from United States, Korea, Japan, Hong Kong and Dubai. Bureau of Immigration (BI) terminal 1 head supervisor Dennis Opina said that with the additional IOs, the queuing system for immigration formalities will be decongested.Opina added that since March 1 the bureau launched the paperless approach for all in-coming Filipino passengers because they had already filled out forms prior to their departure at NAIA, while foreign passengers are required to fill up the arrival card but are exempted from submitting the same when departing because the bureau has already data of their entry into the country.
