LONDON | No.1 Undershaft | 290m | 951ft | 73 fl | Pro

No.1 Undershaft

LATEST PROPOSAL:

OLDER PROPOSALS:

City tips Eric Parry’s 1 Undershaft to steal Pinnacle's crown

Battle of the towers hots up as 22 Bishopsgate planning application due in any day

Eric Parry Architects’ scheme for a tower at No 1 Undershaft is expected to steal what would have been the Pinnacle’s crown as the tallest in the City of London, a planning chief has revealed.

Gwyn Richards, head of design for the City corporation, said Parry’s proposals to replace the 32-storey Aviva Building on Leadenhall Street could rise as high as 304m.

This would make it significantly taller than 22 Bishopsgate, PLP’s long-awaited replacement for the Pinnacle, which is currently slated to hit 278m.

“I think there’s a strong case to suggest the Undershaft proposal could be the tallest [in the City],” said Richards.

“A lot of the local townscape fits with the plaza in front, which would justify it reaching the CAA height limit.”

Eric Parry beat off competition from PLP and David Walker Architects to land the project, which could be up to 304m high if it were to reach to the Civil Aviation Authority’s (CAA) current advised limit for tall buildings in the City.

The news comes as a planning application for 22 Bishopsgate is finally expected to be submitted this month, after years of speculation over whether the Pinnacle - aka the Helter Skelter - would be redesigned because its complex facade was too expensive. The architect behind both versions is Karen Cook, who moved from KPF to co-found arch-rival PLP in 2009.

The exact height of 22 Bishopsgate will be confirmed when that planning application is lodged, but while the Pinnacle would have been a little taller at 288m, it would still have fallen short of the CAA limit.

Rogers Stirk Harbour’s Cheesegrater is the City’s tallest tower at the moment - if you exclude the Heron’s mast - but at just 224m it will soon be supplanted.

A conceptual design by Avery Associates for the previous owner of the 1 Undershaft site proposed an angular glass tower peaking at 270m.

Beautiful ,but maybe it will finish like the pinnacle .
It when the skyscraper is proposed ,that it s dangerous for him.
It can be cancelled,or get redesigned or reduced her height.
And we will not see him become real for many years to come.
Time is so slow.

Not to put a dampener on things but I think this thread is premature. The quoted 304m height is most likely the AOD height giving the building a height of less than 290m. CAA restrictions precludes a supertall in the City at this time (hopefully this will change soon if the landing flightpath into London City Airport is re-profiled).

There's actually a somewhat interesting story behind these, it's about protecting views from certain angles. Eh, I was going to post a youtube video but I guess I can't post links yet The video is called The Sightlines of London

Would this be the start of a trend in which every new skyscraper has to react on its direct neighbor in some way :P

Good thing that's the old proposal, then, and that the new one is likely to be different in some way.

This exact complaint has been levied at every building ever built in London going back a thousand years. It was tiresome then and it's tiresome now.

Omg, this project is truly horrible.

Aviva is WAY better. Toned down, elegant.

Another supertall for London, that would be great, with this, the shard, and 22 bishops gate, the three tallest towers in the eu will all be in London with the rest of the top ten tallest all being in London and frankfurt, great times for London.
When frankfurt gets its first supertall 'a certainty' Europe's two financial capitols will be looking very...financial capitol like.

I have no idea what an undershaft is, but this sure seems to be number one all right!

Undershaft? I don't get what's clever or interesting about the name. Can someone explain?
