Still a long way to go.

Inside Phnom Penh's empty new skyscraper: 'This is only for excellencies'

The Vattanac Capital tower – the tallest building in one of the world’s poorest countries – has an occupancy rate below 30%. Customers at its high-end boutiques are likely to be ‘excellencies’, members of Cambodia’s ultra-rich elite of business tycoons and MPs. So, what is the point of such a building?

...so yeah. Echoing the statement that this looks like something out of a video game. Cool concept, but I've got the feeling that land in Phnom Penh isn't expensive enough to warrant such a vertically stretch office building for whoever the customers are. After all, it's a lot cheaper and more efficient to build four 250-meter towers than two 500-meter ones.

well the vast majority of towers over 1000 feet are more about dick waving than economic need.

133 Floor “Thai Boon Roong Twin Trade Center” gets go ahead, Phnom Penh

16th February, 2016

Phnom Penh: The Ministry of Land Management Urban Planning and Construction recently came to an agreement with Oknha Khov Sambath, a representative of Thai Boon Roong Group, in cooperation with a Chinese Construction company, to approve plans for a 133 storey twin tower project.

The project shall equal around 500 square meters of new property for the high rise market in Phnom Penh, and will be located in Sangkat Chaktomuk, Khan Duan Penh, Phnom Penh.

The high-rise will be named the “Thai Boon Roong Twin Trade Center” and is set to be developed on 5 hectares of land in Duan Penh. It is slated to become the tallest building in Asia, located next to the Dreamland amusement park, and in front Naga World.

Mr. Loth Seng, representative of the Ministry of Land Management Urban Planning and Construction, announced the 133 storey Thai Boon Roong Twin Trade Center project is totally approved for construction and already passed on to the City Hall for their final seal. The twin tower project is the subject of around $1000 million investment. Loth Seng added that this huge development indicates confidence in economic stability and real-estate investment in Cambodia. This new development will continue to attract new investors into the Kingdom in the future.

The construction proposal is currently awaiting City Hall approval and it will be sent back to the Ministry of Land Management Urban Planning and Construction to make final announcements of the construction date shortly. The Thai Boon Roong Twin Trade Center project is said to begin in 2016 – and be completed in the next 3 years.

New design? To be true, the old was better. But the size is indeed impressed.

And I thought nearby Nagaworld Hotel were massive for its surroundings. This will stand out like the Mecca Royal Clock Tower.

There are already a couple of tall towers behind the market in Phnom Penh, but these twins are so far out of scale as to be ridiculous.

The render has a poor quality but what i can see is awful
Twins with 133 floors would be from another dimension but imo this design is as bad as possible. It reminds me of the Royal Clock Tower complex in Mekka, impressive but monstrous.

Groundbreaking Held for Southeast Asia’s Future Tallest Towers

Ground was broken in early March for the Thai Boon Roong Twin Tower World Trade Centre – a project consisting of two 500-meter towers – in the Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh. The scheme’s value has been reported by sources in the Cambodian media as either $2 billion or $3 billion.

The 133-story twin towers will contain a mix of residential and commercial units, including a hotel, serviced apartments and offices, a shopping mall, an exhibition hall, a cinema, restaurants, and a basement parking garage.

In addition to the towers, the project will consist of four residential buildings of 59 to 65 stories, an 11-story podium with three levels of basement, and another three levels of basement under the existing Hun Sen Plaza in front of the twin towers. The gross floor area of the complex will be around 1.6 million square meters.

The project is being developed as a joint venture by the Thai Boon Roong Group of Cambodia and Macau-based property developer Sun Kian Ip Group. The construction manager for the scheme, Hsin Chong Construction Group of Hong Kong, was formally appointed on March 10.

Phnom Penh Governor Pa Socheatvong stated during the official launch that the towers would be the tallest ever built in Cambodia and that they would attract billions of dollars to the country’s property sector: “This building project is not only situated in a good location, but it will promote Phnom Penh’s skyline to the next level and attract more investors to the country.”

Tous Saphoeun, Dean of Architecture at Pannasastra University and a designer of the scheme, told the Khmer Times that he expected the project to be finished in three years.

Phnom Penh Government Approves 133-Story Skyscraper

The Phnom Penh government has given final approval for a planned USD$3 billion, 133-story, twin-tower skyscraper complex that developers claim will be completed by 2018, a spokesman for the Ministry of Land Management said on May 2.

Ministry Spokesman Cheam Sophal Makara confirmed that the Thai Boon Roong Group had received approval for the project – a mix of hotel, office, and condominium space. “I have asked officials at the One Window Service at the ministry, and they told me that the project had been signed for approval already, but I don’t know the date of signature,” Sophal Makara shared.

The Thai Boon Roong Twin Trade Center will be built on five hectares of prime real estate across from NagaWorld Casino. If completed today, the two 500-meter-tall developments would be tied as the sixth tallest buildings in the world.

The project comes as Phnom Penh’s property market is showing early signs of saturation. In its most recent report covering the second half of 2015, real estate consultant Knight Frank said that office, retail, and condominium projects have seen rapid growth, with the supply of condos set to increase 641 percent by 2018. The report, which does not include the Thai Boon Roong Center, said the condominium sector is expected to experience “intense downward pressure due to steep competition from 2017 onwards” and predicts that office vacancies will reach 37 percent by 2018.

The country’s tallest building – the 38-story Vattanac Capital building – may offer a glimpse into the twin towers’ fate. Completed in 2014, the tower only reached an occupancy rate of about 30 percent by mid-2015, the company’s senior leasing manager told The Guardian Newspaper in July 2015.

Chairman of Bonna Realty Group Sung Bonna previously estimated that the twin-tower project would take at least three or four years to complete, but declined to give an estimate on May 2 without seeing detailed construction plans.

I just spent 12 days in Phnom Pehn in March. I enjoyed my time there quite a bit. But building stuff like this should be their last focus.

Call me a boring skeptic, but I think one of the primary signs of projects never going to happen, is a ridiculously optimistic completion date. There's only two and a half years 'till the end of 2018. Groundwork hasn't even started. They may be able to get this off the ground by 2018, but completed? That'd take a bit of a miracle.
