All set for grand water park

The state government has approved the blueprint for a RM250mil project to develop a strategic area near the Sarawak-Brunei border into an international water theme park.

The developer — Miri Housing Group of Companies — has received the greenlight from state authorities to go ahead with the recreational park project.

Group executive chairman Datuk Lau Siu Wai said the model for the project had also been approved by the state.

“This water park will be the biggest of its kind in East Malaysia. It will measure a total size of 43ha — a combined size of 107 football fields,” Lau said at a press conference here yesterday.

“It will have a 35ha man-made lake with a man-made island in the middle.

“The park will have an international-standard hotel with 250 rooms, a shopping mall with at least 300 shops, a recreational forest featuring unique plants, trees and herbs found in Sara-wak, facilities for water sports, a water ride and other unique features.

“The theme park will be very eco-friendly, constructed in such a way that we will incorporate a lot of nature into it.

“At any one time, it can accommodate at least 6,000 visitors.

“The design is based on a com-bination of ideas taken from our visits to theme parks in Kuala Lumpur, South Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore and other countries,” he said.

Lau said the project site was located not far from Senadin residential estate, less than 15 minutes from the Sarawak-Brunei border checkpoint in the Kuala Baram district, some 30km north of here.

He said he had always dreamt of building such a landmark that would place Miri on the world tourism map.

Construction work would start in July, Lau said, adding that the park was expected to operate full-scale within two and a half years.

“Thousands of visitors from Brunei come here every weekend for shopping.

“Imagine the number of people entering on a daily basis once we have such an international-standard playground located so near the border,” he said.
