Svartmetall tours ÖREBRO (Sweden) 2014 10 26

Örebro 2014 10 26

Örebro is a small city located in Örebro county to the west of Stockholm. It is a city of 140,599 inhabitants and has a very impressive castle at its centre. It is technically Sweden's sixth largest city!

As usual with our travels around Sweden, we took the train from Stockholm centralstation. But first we had to catch the train from Stockholms Södra station (as we were staying there at that time) and go to the central station.

We then caught one of the regional trains (which happened to be double decker) from Stockholm Central to Örebro station.

Here are some videos of our trip. The first section of our trip is just us leaving Stockholm Centralstation, on a rather miserable day!

Followed by the suburb of Sundbyberg to the edge of Stockholm city.

Finally, some videos of some Swedish countryside!

We actually arrived in to Västerås station and paused there for a short while. I had someone sneezing very nearby though, which was a bit unfortunate!

We then departed Västerås on our way to Örebro!

Made it into Örebro station.

Our train then left us behind on its way to Gothenburg.

We left the station and saw the bus terminal for the city.

Followed by the copious bike parking that one always gets in Sweden.

And we head into Örebro itself!

I liked the purple buses.

We started walking towards the castle as our first stop.

But first we encountered a duck!

And another statue.

Örebro has some grand buildings.

But this is what we really came to see - the Castle.

More to come.

Looking down the street near the castle.

The castle has a nice load of landscaping around it.

And I really, really like this building. It looks so grand compared to most small towns buildings.

Time to witness, the castle.

The river surrounding the castle is really quite fast flowing.

More to come.

Continuing on we start walking away from the castle area and towards the city centre.

And come to pedestrian areas.

Nikolai församling.

And looking back to the square.

Pedestrian street for shopping.

And we reach a square.

Containing rather a new shopping mall (that we'll go into in the next post).

More to come.

Lovely! I may need to add Örebro to the the trip. Not every city has a castle with a moat in the middle of the city center!

Next we head into the shopping mall.

And take a look down the shopping street by video.

Continuing on, my wife and I took a look around the streets of the city centre, starting outside the shopping mall.

And head back to S:t Nikolai Kyrkan. Excuse the wind in the video - the weather really wasn't the best unfortunately!

Outside the church.

And the next set we go inside!

Here we are, inside the church (S:t Nicolai Kyrka).

Organ loft.

View to the altar.

Pews!

And more of the organ.

And to finish off in the church - beautiful stained glass.

Back outside the church we're greeted with this sight.

And quite a stunning building.

More to come.

Continuing back to the waterways of Örebro.

There are some nice buildings abutting the river.

But mostly the river is surprisingly untouched. Which was really pleasant.

Cute buildings.

More to come.

Örebro is lovely, and surprisingly urban and grand in the city center for such a small town. Great pictures, too bad the weather wasn't better.

It is quite nice indeed. Yeah, the weather wasn't perfect, but we wanted to travel that weekend to get away from Stockholm for a bit, so we had little choice. Despite that Örebro was a nice getaway.

A cannon lurks.

Bullrushes.

Some autumn colours were still visible.

Taller apartments in the centre.

We'd seen quite a lot of the city so we stopped back by the station to see if we could change our ticket to go to Västerås as well, but they wouldn't let us change our train ticket without an exorbitant fee.

So we decided to go and check out some other lesser seen parts of the city.

Including the theatre area.

More to come.

Continuing with the entertainment district.

Örebro bus - again with the purple.

Walking back towards the city centre.

Back past the castle again.

More to come.

Continuing through Örebro.

Another square.

And the other half of the city centre.

And the second church of the centre.

More to come.

Continuing with the second Cathedral.

Walking past the "justice district".

Centralstation again.

More to come.

Time for some more unusual views.

We stopped for coffee to kill some time.

And carried on walking.

Encountering this fellow on our travels.

And more beautiful buildings.

And a more typical view of a Swedish city.

And a very atypical one - excellent graffiti.

One more set to come. Hope people have viewed this despite the lack of comments.

So, the final posts in this set...

Here we go. We've finally returned to Örebro centralstation, only to find most of the Swedish rail network has been shut down.

Corridors under the station.

Platforms at the station.

Since the trains were delayed for around 5 hours (!) we went for another walk to the other side of the station. Typical Swedish midrise suburbia.

Back at the station... Still no luck.

Still none turning up. Terrible customer service too - despite me saying I had work the next day they said "tough, stay in a hotel and travel tomorrow". This is why I don't take a train in Sweden any more...
