How can the trains carry average of 2.4 million passengers per day? Are the trains 100 cars long? Are those counted 2 times when passengers enter and leave the trains? Do the trains come every 30 seconds? So many questions.....I don't know where and how they got those such numbers for that segment.

It seems that the operators of the U-Bahn in Hamburg, Berlin and Munich don't publish ridership numbers for each line separately, but only the ridership no. for the whole metro network.

All I know is that the heaviest used part of the Hamburg U-Bahn is the stretch of line U3 from station "Berliner Tor" to station "Billstedt" (an eastern suburb).

Hello,

I have some updated figures for São Paulo Metro: it transported 684,400,000 passengers in 2008, a 12% increase in just one year (we haven't had any extensions during this time, so it's quite a huge number!). Just remembering Line 3 has a peak load demand of around 80,000 pphpd, one of the highest in the world, comparable to that of Tozai Line in Tokyo, Tsuen Wan Line in HK or one of the Moscow radial lines.

Hey Martini87,

Thanks for the update. I was actually one of those passengers on the Sao Paulo Metro in 2008. The Sao Paulo metro is extremely well run. 12% is an amazing increase in one year.

The 2007-figure for the Milan metro network shows 328.000.000 pax.

I'll look for the 2008, if I find it...

New Delhi's current metro ridership is around 850,000 riders/day(~310M riders/year). It is projected to increase to over 2,500,000 riders/day (~912M riders/year) once all of phase 2 is completed by Sept 2010, increasing route length from 65kms to over 190kms.

Wouldn't it be nice if you actually updated the data in the first post? Specially the information based on some kind of official reference brought in later posts.

Something that really confuses me at times is how these numbers are considered. For example, in São Paulo we have 684 mi entries, but if you consider the transfering passengers between its own lines the number goes up to 945 mi. I never know if the data on other system is the first or the second thing.

The list has been updated with the information received. I have also only tried to include subway/metro/heavy rail systems but the definition of what that constitues depends on who you talk ask.

Martini87 I try to use system entries and not count passengers transferring between different lines. This is not the case for cities with more than one Metro operator like Tokyo or Seoul. System ridership for these cities is therefore higher than for places like Moscow or Mexico City with just one Metro operator.

coth you are correct most of the information comes from system annual reports, system web sites, Wikipedia and magazine and newspaper articles.

Bombay (Mumbai) currently has what is technically a commuter/suburban rail system, but also functions as a rapid transit system, since it provides significant connectivity within the CBD and central districts. The system dates back to 1857 (first railway in India/Asia) and is not built to modern rapid transit standards, and would technically be like the S-Bahn though functionally it is like a combined S-Bahn + U-Bahn.

This system has a daily ridership of close to 7M riders/day, or 2,555M riders/year, making it among the busiest single urban railsystems in the world. In addition, Mumbai is currently building a 145km metro and 35km monorail system, both due to open 2010-11.

I can't believe Beijing has more ridership than Shanghai! Shanghai has 9 lines and Beijing has 6. I guess maybe because Beijingers rely on public transportation more than Shanghainese. These statistics should change when Shanghai opens line 7,9,10,and 11.

Why not? Vienna has more ridership than Berlin too, for example.

Beijing has a flat fare, while Shanghai has a distance-based fare. Plus, Beijing's flat fare is actually lower than Shanghai's base fare (i.e., the starting fare). Of course, both are still dirt-cheap, regardless.

London's Northern Line is the most used with 206,987 per year, but the Victoria Line is the busiest with 13,132 per route mile...
