I never anticipated that Moscow had so many beautiful and interesting gems! You always get this image of a big dirty city filled with commie blocks, the Kremlin and those giant Stalinist skyscrapers. Good job on showing Moscow's real face!

How much of Moscow is covered with older residential buildings? Are there any gigantic quarters of historicist residential buildings like those that we have in Central Europe (and in Sankt Petersburg) or are there just few historical buildings surrounded by commieblocks? When I look at the photos of Moscow, the second option seems to be true, but I want to hear it from someone that has seen it in person.

First of all, sure Moscow has a historical center. Moscow has a really big and beautiful historical center. Nearly every historical city in Russia has nice historical centers, some centers suffered by the war, some survived it
( Russia has a lot of commie block cities too, they are completely covered with commie blocks, because most of them were built in soviet era). These commieblock pictures of Moscow are just the outskirts of Moscow
Here you can see a picture of the historical center of Moscow

and here some street scenes of the city center

You can check out the center on Google Street View! But pay attention, a lot of street panoramas are outdated, a lot of them have been reconstructed and improved for pedestrians.

I hope I helped you

Oh, thanks a lot! I always feared that Moscow (and other Russian cities except for St. Petersburg) were full of commieblocks and with no historical buildings except for few churches and (mindblowingly beautiful) palaces. I'm also glad to hear that many of the old buildings in Moscow have been renovated.

Actually, the center of Moscow suffered A LOT at soviet times. There are still some nice buildings and places but it's mostly a shadow of what it used to be. Especially it concerns churches, more than 150 of them were competely destroyed including very old and valuable ones (not counting those that were destroyed partially, turned into warehouses etc.). Besides churches Moscow lost some of its iconic buildings which had been considered as symbols of the city such as Sukharev's Tower, Red Gates, walls and towers of Kitay-Gorod.
Good news is that what was left at last begins to be renovated. Though the quality of works is, well, uneven, and some crappy new buildings keep appearing. One of them is seen in a center of a second photo posted by Wolfowitsch.
