Green/Eco-Friendly Architecture

Hey guys,

Please share Green/Sustainable/Eco-Friendly buildings in your city/region/country.

I will start with my hometown, Vancouver.

Green Vancouver

Vancouver wants to establish itself as “the greenest city in the world by 2020” by demonstrating that economic growth and the welfare of its citizens depends on developing renewables, rapid transit systems, and promoting cycling and walking to curb car use.

Vancouver Convention Centre

One of the largest green roofs in the world — a six-acre living roof bigger than four football fields. The building was certified LEED Platinum.

The living roof, seawater heating and cooling, on-site water treatment and fish habitat built into the foundation of the building make it one of the greenest convention centres in the world.

The building's heating and cooling system feeds through the deep water of the harbor, using it as a constant temperature base to reduce the amount of energy used for heating and cooling.

The Centre recycles an average of 180,000 kilograms of materials annually, nearly half of the total volume of waste generated.

Our Planet

All wastewater generated in the building is treated and recycled for use in toilet and urinal flushing, as well as green roof irrigation.

Bosco Verticale
Milan, Italy

heights: 111 m - 78 m
use: residential towers
design: stefano boeri studio

These towers are located in Porta Nuova. The Milan's new district is still U/C, but is registering great interest at national and international levels.

Bosco Verticale is a model for a sustainable residential building, a project for metropolitan reforestation that contributes to the regeneration of the environment and urban biodiversity without the implication of expanding the city upon the territory. It is a model of vertical densification of nature within the city that operates in relation to policies for reforestation and naturalization of large urban and metropolitan borders.

The first example of the Vertical Forest composed of two residential towers in Milan, host 900 trees (each measuring 3, 6 or 9 meters tall) and over 2,000 plants from a wide range of shrubs and floral plants that are distributed in relation to the façade’s position to towards the sun. On flat land, each Vertical forest equals, in amount of trees, an area equal o 7,000 sqm of forest. In terms of urban densification the equivalent of an area of single family dwellings of nearly 75,000 sqm. The vegetal system of the Vertical Forest aids in the construction of a microclimate, produces humidity, absorbs CO2 and dust particles and produces oxygen.

On November 19, 2014, the international jury for the prestigious “International Highrise Award”, promoted by the Frankfurt Museum of Architecture, has announced that the Vertical Forest (il Bosco Verticale) of Milan is the winner of the prize that every two years is assigned to the most beautiful and innovative highrise in the world.

The president Christoph Ingenhoven said: “The Vertical Forest is an expression of the human need for contact with nature. It is a radical and daring idea for the cities of tomorrow, and without a doubt represents a model for the development of densely populated urban areas in other European countries”. Its creator, Stefano Boeri declared: “The Vertical Forest represents a new approach to the highrise building, where trees and humans share their living space. It is the first example worldwide of a tower that enhances the hosting city with plant and fauna biodiversity.”
