A Richard Meier Building. In Black.

The 42-story tower at 685 First Avenue, between 39th and 40th Streets, will have 69 balconies that provide city views of Midtown

I like the use of black glass, fits NY better than blue reflective.

This may become my favorite highrise going up. Nice to see a change from all the blue glass going up everywhere in Manhattan.

Using my imagination on the dodgy renders, it's super simple and a nice colour, and even though the stripe annoyed me at first I think it will be a nice touch, I can think of a thousand worse highrises in the world. I think once we go from some of the most fakey looking renders I've seen since joining this forum to an actual physical building, most people will see that it's not a bad tower at all.

It's by Richard Meier, I'm sure it will end up super quality.

Richard Meier’s first NYC skyscraper starts its climb above street level in Turtle Bay
December 2, 2016

Quote:
Richard Meier’s 685 First Avenue–the starchitect’s largest and tallest building in the city to date–has begun its above-ground ascent, reports CityRealty. The 42-story, 460-foot-tall slab tower is located along the East River at 40th Street, just south of the United Nations, and has gained attention for its dark glass facade, a noticeable shift from Meier’s signature beige aesthetic. Its 408 rentals and 148 condominiums are expected to be completed by early 2019, and now that construction is “craned and above street level,” the project is well on its way.

Renderings Capture Modernist Elegance of Richard Meier's Tallest NYC Tower
Quote:
A new round of renderings for the 42-storey 685 First Avenue development has been released to coincide with the start of construction, depicting a refined elegance courtesy of East River Partners and Richard Meier & Partners Architects. A leader in clean Modernist design, the 140-metre (460-foot) tower will be the practice's tallest in New York City.

The niche in the center looks like a mistake. If it went completely around the building it would look a lot better.

I can't find myself to dislike a glossy black skyscraper. I think this will turn out fine, especially if the plot across is filled with the typical translucent blue.
