The building they are razing is already more than I can ever wish for for my city. All these 400m towers are just nuts, it's just sad that the tower will probably be extremely thin again. The plot doesn't look as small as the others though, so I hope they try to make it a little wider.

The site is huge. Part of the appeal to Vornado is to develop a huge new retail base.

I'm rarely defending modernist buildings when they're in danger as most of them that are torn down are bland, uninspiring or ugly.
But this is an elegant building that definitely should stay, it's criminal to tear down such an elegant and timeless gem!

What are they thinking, isn't this landmarked?
They need to find another site, there's so many fugly non-architectural lowrises all-around or simpler buildings
they could build atop or behind their facades...

It's completely ridiculous to demolish skyscrapers like this when there are still dilapidated lowrises to build on.

Original 1957 interior by Isamu Noguchi, apart from the floors, which used to be white marble with a black and red marble grid-like pattern. They now appear to be granite.

This stunning mansion at 660 Fifth was razed to make way for the current tower.

I assume you've never been to NY. Most of Manhattan is old and beautiful.

That being said, most old buildings between 42nd St and 57th have been razed.

Anyway, I'll take a 1,400' Zaha over the current Tower.

In case something better follows up, a loss won't be that bad. But still, there are more non-descript buildings that could go before. Wishful thinking, but not always.

Anyway, Manhattan could be much more beautiful nowadays with more of the grand mansions left. They would also transport more sunlight to the streets. Large swathes of Midtown are overly built-up and obstructed, it's not that pleasant anymore. Impressive, but certainly not such a nice place to spend some time in the streets. It feels like walking at the bottom of the canyon, while we all know it's much more pleasant to walk atop or in the mid-range.

The house was built for William K and Alva Vanderbilt in the 1880's. Designed by Richard Morris Hunt.

Saying that Midtown is overly built up and too dense is like saying Rome has too many landmarks. That is part of what this city is.
And yes walking on an avenue in Midtown is different from a stroll on a tree lined suburban street and it should be.
Otherwise how would you be able to enjoy the sight of a bum passed out laying face down on the sidewalk of Madison Avenue 40 feet from the entrance if a super luxury high-rise?
Same argument as when nimbys are complaining about tall buildings around central park. Tens of thousand of people go to the park BECAUSE it's in the middle of a huge metropolis and the view of those buildings are beautiful. Plenty of suburbs around with sunny streets and parks with no tall buildings casting shadows on them.

I don't mind density, what I don't like is the real estate market's obsession with ultra high end luxury apartments and subsidized housing in the city. It's either crazy apartments for gazillionaires or the low income portion that they have to do as part of the deal.
Everything is über, never before seen starchitect luxury or you get to live here you poor bastard and not much in between, which is not healthy for the city. If you make a healthy but not exceptional salary here, you're screwed.

I have serious doubts about whether there's a real market for yet another tower that wants to dump insanely overpriced property on the mega rich. I know, your kitchen cabinet will be designed by Zaha herself so it'll be like a more awesome curvy cabinet, but who even cares?

It should have just been the bottom section extended up.

I don't think much can out-ugly the Baku Tower.

Don't be ridiculous ! While Zaha's Melbourne tower is heinous, 2 WTC is a stunner and is acclaimed by architects and critics.

Robert is pro NY, what do you expect.

I would also like to know how he's able to make accounts after getting banned.

NEW YORK | 666 5th Ave. | 427m | 1400ft | ? fl | Pro

He's not him (or so he says). Whatever. We can play along for now. He's clearly trolling the threads with his constant defense of 2WTC. Just looking for any argument he can with someone.

He can either knock it off, or continue and get banned like his pal has.
