In Bogota most modern buildings are made with brick, making an extensive brick landscape.

Casa della Memoria (House of Memory)
Milan, Italy

Designed by Italian architecture collective Baukuh, the building is located in Puorta Nuova area, near Bosco Verticale. Opened in 2015, the Casa della Memoria is not really a museum or a cultural centre or a library, but a "collective house" in which Milanese citizens hope to find protection for the "memories they want to preserve", especially the conquests of freedom and democracy.

Also the building can be seen as the "headquarters" of five national associations: the National Association of Former Deportees (ANED), the National Association of Italian Partisans (ANPI), the National Association of Terrorism's Victims (AIVITER), the Association Piazza Fontana 12 December 1969 and the National Institute of Studies on the Italian Resistance Movement (INSMLI).

The building facades envelop at the same time monumental and fragile moments, through the use of portraits of anonymous Milanese citizens, which suggest the multiplicity of the populations that animated the city in the post-war period, and of historical images which record moments in the recent history of the city such as the deportation to concentration camps, the Liberation from Nazi-Fascism, the piazza Fontana bombing of 12 December 1969. All the images were selected by a scientific committee.

This exterior decoration in polychrome brickwork establishes a direct relation with the tradition of city's buildings such as the Maggiore Hospital and Santa Maria delle Grazie Church. The facades are entirely realized in bricks and combine a frame made of pilasters and architraves in slight relief with large recessed fields entirely occupied by images: nineteen squares with portraits and eight large rectangles with historical scenes. The polychrome bricks, in a range of six different colours, have been especially produced to specific dimensions.

The building is divided into three parts that are connected to one another by an entirely open ground floor. One third of this area reaches the building’s full height and includes an imposing yellow spiral staircase. The rest is occupied by exhibition spaces and offices disposed on three levels. The brutalist style of the interior spaces indicates bad moments that people have experienced.

There is such a great interaction between the building and the garden, the trees with burgundy red leaves create a frame for the building, so thoughtful. The wood in the interior really complements the walls made of bricks.

Yeah, on its own, that mansion works quite well. It really doesn't seem to fit into its surroundings though.

Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau, 1901-1930

One of the best example of catalan modernism. The brick and ceramic work is simply astonishing.

It truly is astonishing. And looks like as it had opened to public just yesterday!

To those more travelled among us, a question: what are your favourite brick cities and why? I've only been to Amsterdam and Bruges... I wish I get to visit Tolouse, Bologna (and other such Italian cities), and hopefully some American cities too. I visited London too but it's not a brick city IMO, much more diverse and eclectic.

^ Try Lübeck! If you liked Bruges, this is a great place, so many medieval treasures in brick architecture. It's called "Mother of the Hanseatic League and Brick Gothic" for a reason.

Of course, the smaller old towns of Stralsund, Wismar, Lüneburg and Stade are well worth a visit too, once you're in the region. And Hamburg for its amazing Speicherstadt and Kontorhausviertel in unique brick historicism and expressionism architecture. Also Bremen for its expressionist "Schnoor" quarter and the breathtaking market square.
