I really like it, and in Sheffield (UK) some brutalist apartment blocks were clad in bricks during refurbishment and I think it looks great! I've never seen it done before.

Brick can make such beautiful buildings, I wished they used it as a material more where I live!

This type of brick architecture is common in Kurdish areas of Iran and Iraq. Some old/ancient buildings (apologises for the watermarks, just did a quick search, these were some of the results):

I will edit post later and add smaller and more representative photos , these are just to give you impression :

---

And also the ancient Abbasid Palace of Iraq, approx. 1,000 years old:

This post is mainly about the neglect in Kurdish cities, but perhaps in the Middle-East in general.

These photos are from the city of Sulaymaniyah (Slemani). Because of the economic boom in Iraq's Kurdish north, a lot of old buildings have been destroyed. There are few regulations when it comes to protection of heritage sites, so people used to buy up neglected lots for cheap, destroy them, and erect modern commercial buildings instead. The region was a warzone for almost 100 years, so most of the towns and cities in Kurdistan (actually in many parts of the Middle-East) are extremely neglected, and are overlooked and thought to be insignificant because they've lost their original charm. If you'd walk in the old town of this city, you'd walk past centuries old buildings and not look back. That's how neglected the old structures are (while in other parts of the city, billions worth of luxury homes, apartments, skyscrapers, etc. are built every year.. ).

I sincerely hope this ''trend'' will change, it's not too late yet, although many buildings are unfortunately gone now. There are luckily some renovations efforts under way, this is an example of recently renovated old brick building:

This is what it looked like before the renovation:

The city is currently full with hundreds of buildings like this, completely neglected, it's a big, big shame:

A lot of the details are fading away;

---

The Middle-East has a lot of potential. Hopefully the priorities will change, or at least more attention will be paid to preserving the old buildings .

Google Street View

The non-bricked part of the district. It follows a well-established scheme of blocks of flats surrounded by numerous parks and car parks, quite popular in Yugoslavia in the 70's & 80's.
