Very old map. Even the harbour changed (with a new boathouse)! "Benedettini" and "Palermo" stations are going to change thier names to "San Domenico" and "San Leone" respectively.

Anyway, this is the current situation:
  • BORGO-STESICORO (and Galatea-Porto branch) --> operating
  • BORGO-NESIMA --> opening soon (spring 2017)
  • NESIMA-MONTE PO --> under construction (opening in 2018)
  • STESICORO-PALESTRO --> under construction (2019-2020)
  • MONTE PO-MISTERBIANCO --> not yet begun
  • PALESTRO - FONTANAROSSA AIRPORT --> not yet begun

You'll find something about here:
http://catania.mobilita.org/2017/01/...elle-stazioni/
There are also some links of streetview; then you can put the satellite visualisation.

Here is the entire map of the Catania Subway complete project from the city of Paternò to the Airport, made by the SSC user Ste_14

In this map it's included the last stretch "Paternò-Misterbianco Centro" (partially underground and partially overground) actually in preliminary design. Next to the Paternò station it's expected the train depot and the railway workshop.

Here's some photos (source Mobilità Catania site) from official Ferrovia Circumetnea (FCE) documents for this stretch:

Misterbianco Centro Station (underground)
(included in the previous stretch "Monte Po-Misterbianco Centro")

Gulotta Station (underground)

Belpasso Station (underground)

Valcorrente ("Etnapolis" mall) Station (overground)

Giaconia Station (underground)

Paternò Ardizzone Station (overground)
Terminal of the double track line with train depot and railway workshop.

The center of the city of Paternò will be connected to the Ardizzone station with an underground People Mover:

Why was it decided to close Stazione FS station despite it being the only interchange point between standard railway and the metro?

Because that interchange is now available at Giovanni XXIII station, located in front of the railway station.

Ok, on the map the stations didn't look next to each other. Haven't been there myself yet.

The system is growing quite a lot. Hopefully it can make some dent on traffic congestion. Having driven in several of notoriously 'bad traffic' Italian cities, I'd say Catania has some of the worst situations for mid-size cities, plenty of bottlenecks, unfavorable terrain and no bysecting highway to help out.

Yeah, we know... some people say "once you learn to drive in Catania, you can drive everywhere"
One of the problem is the lack of "culture" in certain citizens, that cause bottlenecks (like parking everywhere, even in bus lanes ). But also the lack of a good public transport (the bus service has some problems) force many people to use the car.
We hope these new stations can be able to reduce part of the traffic

This station will be illuminated by natural light thanks to the glass covers (something new for our subway)

Here's a video taken by a drone of construction sites (July 2016):
