Latest Docklands renderings.

The offical docklands renderings now include the latest Spencer Street Station design and latest vesrisons of Waterfront City and Victoria Harbour. Also note the future tower on the rail yards to the North of Latrobe Street :-)

A lot of rail-related needs to be done to get to that stage (North of La Trobe street) - there's a V/Line maintenance facility there if I'm not mistaken.

First thing's first, I think they should build that new rail bridge to the west of the Bolte to link up with the old Webb Dock rail line (would need to be duplicated) and in effect move Dynon next to the new super-tanker terminals to the south of the West Gate - prime position for tri-modal facilities too (see arrows)

With Dynon moved, Docklands could start developing the Dynon / Melbourne Yard lands once there's no land left in the current project.

I like the fact they're still entertaining the idea of at least some high-rise on the Vic Harbour peninsula - likewise, if they really got a shithot Shangri-La proposal up on blocks, I'd be happy if it was the only key tower in the precinct.

I really really really hope Comtechport turns out to be a tightly-packed cluster-fuck of mid/high-rises too

I also wonder: does Channel 7 have any expansion options next to their studios? cos there's two campuses rendered right next to it!

You have to remember that these renderings are done in silly colours for clarity and are not photrelaistic at all. It just gives a clear overview of what is going where and also what is new and what is existing.

Most of the buildings are just building envelopes and not actual designs, the yellow blocks of cheese will never be built they are just their to show that something will be bult there.

come on Melb'
Sure it's "nice" and all but this area need to really put us "on the map" internationally and blow peoples clothes off when they see it.
It's just...nice.
Better than nothing but I dont want Melb' to miss this chance.

Response

My first opinion is this is stage 1. Wait another 10-15 years once things have started really developing and then you'll see new proposals, old buildings being replaced with taller bigger ones etc. It takes time for this land to become real hot property and for developers to really start building big. My personal opinion is they should flood the Dynon completely to make more water area with some green areas (parks) and then buld around this. In my opinion the water expanse is too small an theres not enough green. We need to do some serious earth moving and widen the water area and then we're talking!! Green area is the way to go - we need parks with palms, water features etc lining the water edges somewhere here (like Sydney Harbour). Like that big dirt area near the bolte bridge (west side) - build a hill and turn it into a park or something or even flood it completely and make a nice wide open water area. Too much concrete, roads and factories looks shit dull - we need some kind of green area north west of docklands. Its all too choked with factories/smoke.

Is it just me, or are Eureka and FWP missing from the last render?

A lot of that ain't gonna happen. VLP maintenance facility at Dudley St would need to be moved somewhere for a start. Tays, grandiose ideas about moving Dynon but that's never gonna happen either - not unless somebody hocks up about $10bil for the project. Also, moving it to Webb Dock screws up any chance of directly connecting it to the proposed Std gauge line to the again proposed container terminal at Hastings. Lastly, moving the freight terminal to Webb dock screws up the spurs to Appleton and Swanston dock - they'd have to do a complete balloon loop, crossing Footscray Rd, and then rising steeply to meet up with the main line parallelling the tollway.

Otherwise, not a bad idea :P

$10billion to move an intermodal facility, build a rail bridge over the yarra and reinstate rail lines that lie in situ (and duplicate it)?

ah no, thinking you're drinking just a little too much Beam there

Maybe 10bil is a bit steep, but there's so many more things to be done then the ones you mentioned. CTC has to be partially rebuilt, signalling diagrams re-mapped and issued, signalling and other infrastructure to be undertaken, land acquisition. Then there's the compensation to be paid to PN, QR National, CRT and any other TOC's that use Dynon yard while the neccesary works are undertaken there (points to be bypassed, track re-aligned and tamped, and then there's at least a week or so while Dynon is shut down and Webb Dock brought to life)...and that's all just off the top of my head

I agree with icanseeformiles: it's bluddy uninspiring. Docklands is a serious lost opportunity. WTF is with the medium to low rise?! And the sheds on central pier must GO!

The low to medium rise is due to 'current market conditions' in a couple of years time these renderings could show twice as many tall skyscrapers again :-)
