LAHORE: As many as 27 trains will ply the Orange Line metro train (OLMT) track with an average headway of two minutes.

Documents available with The Express Tribune indicate that 27 train sets, comprising of 135 cars, would be procured at an estimated cost of $1 billion. The project will be funded through a loan provided by China’s Exim Bank. These trains will run on the Orange Line in five-car formation that will include three motor cars and two trailers.

The new mass transit system has the capacity to carry 30,000 passengers per hour. As many as 300,000 passengers are expected to use the train daily. Operating hours of the Orange Line metro train will be 18 hours (5:30AM to 23:30PM).

Maximum speed of the train has been set at 80 kilometres per hour, barring some turns and curves.

Documents show that a double-track will be built, with three rails on each track.

The middle rail at the bottom of each track will energise trains with 750-volt direct current. These trains will have a stainless steel, fireproof body.

Wires and cables used on the rolling stock shall be halogen-free, fire-retardant and low-smoke. No flammable material will be used in the rolling stock.

Two high-voltage substations will be built near the University of Engineering and Technology (UET) and the Shahnoor Station. Each substation will be connected to 132KV power supply.

The project will also have a Power Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition System (PSCADA) for monitoring, control and communication. This system will enable provision of data and control of the power rail.

The OLMT track will be equipped with telecom, radio, CCTV, a public address system and an audio-and-video recording system. The orange line will also have an automatic train control (ATC) and a modern signalling system.

In summer, public areas of the OLMT stations will have air conditioning facility with mechanical ventilation in other seasons. Fire detection, automatic and semi-automatic ticket selling and checking systems are also part of the design.

A realistic look at Orange Line train project

Shanzay Minhal Mustafa
April 03, 2016

In an atmosphere where the nation has so many dimensions to celebrate prosperity because of the efforts of the current government, there are other beneficiaries who aim to criticise none but all at the same time.

For that matter, facts need to be addressed and understood. The world at large is already done with the phase of building mass transit transport machines. Currently as we speak, as much as 52 countries all over the world already have metro trains successfully operating. The entire world at large is a heritage site but this has never been a hindrance to development. Pakistan is already a developing country and completely lagging behind when it comes to solving the issues of mass transit facing Pakistan.

For instance, Greece is one of the most ancient countries of the world. It has a metro train and that too in the ancient city Athens. Who would not agree that the government must have faced huge amount of criticism when initiating a metro train project in Athens, a city with several historical sites at its disposal. Moreover, what needs to be realised is that Lahore is not the only city in this world that is rich in terms of its historical background and why such mega projects have become a necessity. The reason why infrastructural developments have always been popular is that these pave the way for more positive future aspects.

Furthermore, it is a matter of common sense that metro train projects in Pakistan are not at all meant to destroy heritage sites, but to increase their beauty and historical importance. This is how metro trains have been contributing to the heritage of cities since the time the first of its kind was constructed. For example, the Shalimar Gardens is a heritage site in Lahore and comes in the way of the orange metro train track. However, the facts are less known. The actual beauty of the monument starts not from the boundary wall of the garden, but the place where the monument rests. Plus, the track is located at a higher position from the ground which means that people would be able to get a panoramic view of the site like never before.

It will prove to be a boost to the Tourism Industry which is currently in the backdrop in Pakistan. This would also lead to the upgradation of the heritage sites as more and more people will become aware of their presence and importance.

Why shouldn’t an optimistic approach cross one's mind that these infrastructural developments will only bring forth an economic revival of sorts and if then, any flaw remains unaddressed, will be outweighed?

These are environment friendly projects, highly feasible, will lessen pollution, increase connectivity and ensure a fast pace of life. Now, in the face of current developments, if a little deforestation has to be done, why not learn from the past that the whole world as we see it developing today is a result of a lot of deforestation and then later replaced by afforestation.

According to an EIA report, 620 trees along the train route were to be cut for the construction of the track. It also says that the Punjab Metro Bus Authority (PMA) and the Parks and Horticultural Authority (PHA) would plant 6,200 trees as a replacement and the plants will be selected in view of their ability to absorb carbon emissions.

Climate change and global warming is a fact, but so is over population. Lahore, the second largest city of Pakistan, has a high rate of migrant's influx. This sums up why none of the projects under CM Punjab's Government are "unnecessary". Moreover, the Government of Punjab already seems to be well aware of environmental concerns because the Environment Protection Department has already approved the Environment Impact Assessment Report of the Lahore Orange Metro Train Project.

As per the EPA report 2015, to balance with the primary objectives of the project, three alternatives were given. The second one which said that the Orange Line with cut and cover (1.72 km) and via duct (5.64 km) was selected as the most "feasible" option as it can help solve the problem of traffic congestion and reducing air pollution, noise, fuel consumption and time delays. The report also mentioned that "project area falls in Seismic Zone 2A which represents Peak Ground Acceleration (PGA) from 0.08g to 0.16g which is a low to moderate damage zone." Hence, the case of misplaced priorities of the Government can be termed false.

The Metro Bus is providing transportation facilities to as much as 180,000-220,000 people each day. The Orange Metro Train would be able to facilitate more than 250,000 commuters on a daily basis. Adding to these efforts, the Punjab government has not left a single direction where improvements and amendments were not made.

Common grounds of Metro de Paris and Lahore Orange Line Metro Train

Hina Riaz

Paris is the capital of France which is known for its beauty around the globe. The city is easy to fall in love with, as it is a home of breathtaking art, unique monuments, lavishing restaurants and museums. Apart from the landmarks, Paris has worldwide recognition in transport sector. Metro de Paris is a rapid transit metro system with 4.5 million daily ridership serving the capital city of Paris within the Île-de-France region, France. The 214 km long metro train opened in 1900 is the source of high economic growth and development of Paris.

Pakistan is also in dire need of introducing a rapid mass transit system to meet the future transport demands of the increasing population. Recently the Punjab Government has revolutionized the transport culture by introducing Lahore Orange Line Metro Train Project. The development of the first ever rapid mass transit system of the country is very challenging, but once this project is completed it will prove a blessing for all.

The history of Paris Metro and Lahore Orange Line Metro Train is quite similar as both countries were in immense need of Mass Transit system. Today Paris Metro is a symbol of development and modernization, but if you were living in Paris in 19th century, it probably would have felt more like a giant nightmare.

In 1870s, Paris developed horse-drawn streetcars. These streetcars were not capable of fulfilling the transport needs of the most populous city of France. With the population becoming dense, traffic congestion was growing massively and the deadlock put pressure on the authorities to finally build a rapid transit system and Metro provided the best solution.

Similarly, Pakistan has been also using traditional means of transportation like Tonga’s, Auto Rickshaw, Vans and less spaced buses. Whenever a latest vehicle was introduced people literally forgot the previous one and started benefitting from the latest mode of transportation and now Orange Line Metro Train is need of the hour.

For example when Underground Mass Transit system was introduced in London in 1863, it turned the country inside out for once, but today it facilitates 1.17 billion passengers.

New York City underground metro system carried 1.71 billion passengers last year and same is the case with Tokyo, Beijing and Istanbul, who are providing fast, modern and dignified rides to their public due to the fulfillment of mega road projects.

It was equally challenging for Paris to introduce the first ever metro train system, as Paris was in debt; there were financial crisis due to which the construction process could not go smoothly. Equally worrisome were the social and spatial questions of whether railway was compatible with the urban spaces and urban life. Another dilemma was the location of Paris metro train.

The train was to be built in the heart of the city, close to architectural sites.
Different forces protested against Paris Metro, calling Metro de Paris a threat to the beauty and integrity of Paris.

Today Lahore Orange Line Metro train is being criticised for posing a so called threat to the heritage. A historical preservation society named, “Society for the Friends of Parisian Monuments” was established in 1884 that said the metro would damage Paris’s architectural patrimony. Specifically they were worried about structural damage from construction and rumbling of trains, the possibility of tunnels collapsing and elevated tracks visually disrupting the monuments and streetscapes.

Opponents named Paris metro as Barbarian tramway. They said Paris metro is anti-national, anti-municipal, anti –patriotic…people even claimed that after the construction of metro there will no longer be a Paris. There were also concerns that Paris Metro would disturb the life on the surface of city, it will create noise, depress property values and violate privacy of the indoor world.

All the criticism was gone after the construction of Paris Metro; people realised that Mass Transit System had beautified Paris, those who opposed it became the supporter and appreciator of the Metro train. Now Metro Paris is the proud of every Parisian. One cannot ignore its significance in the progress and prosperity of the country.

Paris metro strengthens our resolve that Lahore Orange Metro Train is an excellent initiative for providing cheap, time saving and reliable transport in future to all.

After the accomplishment of Lahore Orange Line Metro Train Project everyone will appreciate its role in the provision of international standard transportation, generation of high economic activities and dignified ride to a common man. Lahore Orange Line Metro Train will also become pride for the whole nation and it will catalyse the pace of progress of our country too. We must wish the train luck and let the paths of progress be paved for all and sundry.

Why Lahore is implementing so short trains, for such a huge demand?

I expect 200.000-400.000 riders a day on first line in first year of service, and when system will cover most of major destinations with 3-4 cross-city lines, first line will have maybe more then 1.000.000 riders a day. From the beginning, there is a need to plan 150-200m long train sets and stations.

Another question is what is plan for S-bahn or RER like rail service? There is junction with three double track branches. Does someone plan to do quadruple track those lines for urban/suburban mass transit?

A train for all

May 02, 2016 by Hina Riaz

Lahore Orange Line Metro Train project is in the lime light these days. It is going to revolutionize the transport culture of the metropolitan. The international standard transportation will provide a safe, reliable, cheap and efficient ride. The Orange line metro train project is designed and constructed in an exemplary way to bring maximum comfort for a common man.

Orange Line Metro Train will facilitate people from all walks of life without any discrimination. It is worth mentioning that Lahore Orange Line Metro will not only provide a dignified ride to a healthy man but the physically challenged people mistakenly known as Disables will be also beneficiaries of this project.

In the past people with disabilities could not travel in a public transport due to lack of facilities. They feared that it will be difficult for them to embark or disembark from a local transport, what if they get lost and how will they manage to reach their destination on their own therefore they chose to stay at home and cut off their social life. The disables were vanished from social spheres and they had to abandon their dream to get education, job and exposure on the account of high risks of troubles in transportation.

Now, with the introduction of Orange Line Metro Train Project the situation is going to be changed. Lahore Orange Line Metro Train Project has been started with the aim to facilitate a common man therefore Government of Punjab has paid special heed to the empowerment and mobility of disables. It will provide a safe, comfortable and reliable ride to disables.

The Metro Train has been carefully designed to cater the transportation needs of disables. To ease the journey of disables wheel chairs will be available at the metro stations free of cost. All station platforms are planned to be 102 meters long providing vast space for passengers to stay. The station platforms will also have screen doors for the safety of disables. Moreover these stations will have escalators to ease the physically challenged people; they will be able to move independently like never before.

It has been quoted by officials that:

“All stations of Lahore Orange Line Metro will be accessible for disabled passengers from the street to platform level”

Small shops and kiosks at every station will allow the passengers to purchase newspapers, drinks and snacks. Toilets will be established at every station to assist the disables. Punjab Government has realized the problems of disables; adequate measures have been taken to encourage the marginalized people to travel in public transport without relying on others.

Lahore Orange Line Metro Train will promote a culture of care and realization. The Drivers and conductors will be trained to help people with disabilities. They will provide a boarding and exiting ramp if you just let the driver know which station you need to exit at. Some stations may also have a Raised Boarding Platforms to bridge the gap between the train and the platform making the disables empowered and self dependant.

Apart from the basic requirements, Lahore Orange Line Metro Train will also ease the disables by providing them fully air conditioned travelling experience in a public transport. It will be free of jolts and abrupt shaking saving the disables from frustration and inconvenience.

The Metro trains of the other countries have also succeeded in promoting the ridership of disables through providing comfortable Mass Transit systems. They have adopted special measures for helping people with hearing or speech impairment and a crystal clear increase in the mobility and social activities of the masses was recorded.

It is very appealing that where Lahore Orange Line Metro Train will be comfortable and economical at the same time. The expected end to end fair is merely 20 rupees which is the cheapest in the world. In fact disables will also get additional compensation if required.
Although Lahore Orange Line Metro Train has been not completed yet but the aspect of comforting the disables has been a top priority since beginning. The inclusion of disables is a clear reflection of CM Punjab Mian Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif’s vision as he has a very soft corner for disables. Recently he had also taken the initiative of Khidmat Card for the economic welfare of disables and now the provision of a comfortable ride for the poor and disables is an exquisite addition to the list.

In a nutshell Lahore Orange Line Metro Train will prove a blessing for the disables. Let’s hope that this disables friendly project get completed in no time and improve the lives of disables people. It is said that after every challenge there is a reward, I feel that our disabled brothers have been facing the social isolation challenge for a long time and now Lahore Orange Line Metro Train will lead them to their reward of a happy and independent life again.
