Syntagma Sqr (Constitutional Square, Athens Greece) in early 20th century...

... and in the mid-70s, from the same angle. Much of the picture you got today.

This one shows how the reconstruction stopped after some time and was paused for around 15 years.

And this one shortly after the reconstruction was finished, around the late 30s I'd guess.

A couple of those look good, but the downgrade is pretty evident, specially in the second a third cases. Doing that should be a crime...

RE Oslo: what happened with the palace in the first example? And the new building in the fifth example looks amazing, but what the hell is it? It doesn't even seem to have windows right up until the last floor.

It's not a palace as such. It's three buildings that together formed a luxurious apartment complex. These developments consisting of a multiple buildings that together formed a large complex in unified style used to be quite popular in the richer parts of Oslo. Here is an example of it that have survived. The white building seen in the second set of pictures above is another example by the way.

This complex was known as "Det Engelske Kvarter" (basically meaning the English Block) and was completed in 1886. The block in the middle was sub-divided into seven urban row-houses. The whole complex can be seen better in this model. It was simply demolished in 1962 and replaced with the gray concrete tower in 1964.

The building it is a part of (the one you can see on both sides of it) belonged to the National Telecommunication Administration and it was built as a utility building by them.

Here is the progression of one street corner in BodÝ, Norway.

Around 1920 I think.

Around 1946.

Around 1980.

In 2014.

The central square in Steinkjer, Norway.

Sometime at the turn of the century.

In 1941. I'm not 100% sure it is from the same angle as the picture above.

Today from a higher angle. The white angled building is located at the same place as the building with the spire in the left edge of the first picture.

It is interesting that when the place has remained the same (architecturally) over the years, you can learn different things like how bad car-centric urbanism is for public space and public life. Just compare:

20170208_153306

You barely can *see* anything anymore in the place, compared to how it used to be. I passed by there recently and I was keen to compare with the painting, which is one of my favourite ever paintings in terms of depiction of urban life. It was so disappointing! I couldn't feel anything when being there.
