Before any restart of construction, that diagonal structure that cuts through the Grossmarkthall still needs to be scrapped. Why does the design have that small structure anyway?

I like that structure. It will create a real entrance in the otherwise monotonous facade of the Grossmarkthalle.

I hate it, and it needs to disappear from the design. It will ruin the look of the old Grossmarkthalle?

some new info about the first stages of construction (ecb press release):

Quote:
Start of construction

The construction works for the new premises of the European Central Bank (ECB) will start in spring 2010. The "Structural works" package consists of the structural works for all the buildings comprising the new ECB premises, the requisite steelwork and the restoration of the Grossmarkthalle.

Building of the new premises

The structural design of the two office towers is based on reinforced concrete frame constructions. The north tower will consist of 45 floors and the south tower 43. Steel trusses and connecting platforms in the atrium join the two towers together to create a single static structure.

Restoration of the Grossmarkthalle

A large part of the construction works focuses on the restoration of the Grossmarkthalle, which was built according to the design of Professor Martin Elsaesser during the period 1926-28. The basic appearance of the Grossmarkthalle will be maintained, with the facades and surfaces being restored in line with the preservation order.
The new functional facilities of the ECB conference and visitors centre, staff restaurant, cafeteria and press conference area will be integrated into the hall as individual internal buildings (house-in-house concept) and will be constructed as a reinforced concrete composite structure

Schedule

The structural works are due for completion by spring 2012.

Bricks, glass, metal, concrete

The new premises of the European Central Bank (ECB) consist of glass, clinker and metal facades.

Renovation of the facades of the Grossmarkthalle

The former Grossmarkthalle is characterised by concrete grid and clinker facades, while the double office tower and the entrance building with their glass and metal facades are both clearly identifiable as new. New steel windows made of narrow steel sections similar to the existing sections will be fitted into the facades of the Grossmarkthalle.

Glass facade of the high-rise

The double tower is designed as a monolithic glass structure, with the two towers being joined together by a transparent atrium. The energy-efficient 뱒hield hybrid facade of the office towers, which consists of three layers, offers all the energy-related advantages of a conventional double-glazed facade, while allowing for the direct natural ventilation of the rooms by means of vertical, floor-to-ceiling ventilation louvres.

Here is stated that the total height (with the antenna) of the new ECB headquarter will be 220m. I guess we have to move this thread from highrise to skyscraper then.

Well, I know that we don't count antennas in Germany but I always thought on scyscrapercity that is different. I have seen threads from towers in London or Istanbul were they did include the antenna, therefore I'm asking?

Spires are counted, antennae are not.

I think spires are actually counted as structures and antenna's are not. That's why

the title can be changed from on hold to prep: first construction equipment arrived, the site is being prepared for the construction start in april 1 (and the floor count needs to be changed to 45).
