according to wikipedia burj khalifa was 1.5 billion $ and 1.4 billion$ for the ecb headquarter.

floor area ecb ... 184,000 m2
burj k ....... ....... 309,473 m2

thats quite an expensive square meter for the former.

Both properties are barely comparable. The Burj K. was erected in Dubai. That means you pay much less taxes and can employ workers (e.g. Pakistanis) for 10$ /day.

You also have to notice, that the Großmarkthalle, which will be integrated in the ECB, is heritage-protected. So I guess the renovation was quite expensive, at least it was time-consuming.

Thats not inflation corrected, is it? It also does not take the conference center into account either, does it? A conference hall is probably more expensive per m2 than office space.

And then we would only have a basis for comparison. You'd have to continue with taking differences in taxes and working costs into account. Before making cheap shots at supposed public workers incompetence.

i didnt even take the latest numbers. according to these, the building will cost 1,2 billion € (not $!).
http://www.spiegel.de/wirtschaft/soz...-a-857082.html

lets compare it to tower 185, which was completed lately in frankfurt and did cost appr. 450million€.
http://www.welt.de/print/welt_kompak...ggestellt.html

ecb 184,000 m2 = 6512 € per sm
t185 100,500 m2 = 4470 € per sm

******* waste of money for that building.

I still won't say it's a waste of money. It looks much more prestigious than T185. The ECB is meant to be a powerful institution, it needs a representative office building. And the old one was too small.

I've read that the ECB tower will only have 115 sqm, btw. Not sure, though.

Well, at least you are not comparing totally apples and oranges, but still. Does the Tower 185 feater a conference center? What are its security features? Comparable to the ECB? These are just some of the questions.

Then there are more factors like the protected market hall and complicated star architecture. These two things certainly don't make the building cheaper and one could argue if they are necessary. I doubt private investors would be in a very different position however if it would go for these two things (and thats not a scenario that is totally beyond imagination)

I don't know, probably depends a lot on what kind of area one is talking about. Here they are talking about 185000 m2 however: https://www.tender.new-ecb-premises....b_premises.php

Euronews is not the best either. Nor is some TV1 news in Lithuania where they claim the Shard to be the tallest building in Europe when its ovo topped by MCT.

No it is not, but at least it is not exclusively focusing on nutheads, conspiracy guys and vocal minorities and sometimes it even dares to mention positions totally against its own.

Russia Today reflects todays Russia very well: an autocracy that focuses on problems abroad to deflect from internal issues. While it was politically useful to have these kind of (radio) stations in the 1970ies in order to bring communist ideology to Guinea or Cuba, today the multiplier effect is 0! Its a ridiculous television station and definitely more a waste of tax money than the ECB Tower. In 2012 RT costs 300 M $! 4 years of RT and you get an ECB Tower.

Even Chinese CCTV (with its equally ridiculous self promotion shows) is better, since it is at least does not include ridiculously sarcastic moderators as Max Kaiser.

It is funny though that on some topics (read: conspiracies) RT and FOX NEWS like to interview the same crazy guys.

Host: >Making bold claim< ... that's not according to me, that's according to Max Keiser!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5CHKjKi_LZc
Strong sources make RT strong!

Anyway, lets get back on topic again. Does anyone know when the exterior is going to be completed by far and large (cladding to the top)?
