Even though I'm a skyscraper fan, I think this tower is totally and utterly inappropriate. It can't be justified to build a new ECB headquarters while Europe is in the worst crisis since WWII. Modesty would suit those bankers.

wait. it isnt the ecb who is in financial trouble, it's the states, primarily the southern european ones. and as i remember, the ecb was arguing that erecting the building during recession would be cheaper (lower raw materials prices). and since the building had to be erected anyway sooner or later, building it now is actually the most "austere" option.

They should have waited because this recession is getting bigger every day. Next to that, I think it's too easy to say that "Europe", of which the ECB is an important part, didn't have anything to do in creating this crisis (or letting it happen for that matter).

This building was started before the recession started (construction start almost 3 years ago, planning started several years earlier). Should construction be stopped? Do you think that would help anyone to have some construction ruin standing around, costing more than if one simply finishes it?

The current crises was not created by wrong doing of the ECB but by an incomplete currency union. The ECB was the only functioning part of it actually but it obviously could not replace all the rest needed for a functioning currency forever.

Wrong. Especially in recessions or when the economy slows down government spending should even increase in order to maintain demand (John M. Keynes). So does the ecb. The worst would be if even the governmental institutions ceased buying and spending.

The red brick building next to it looks like a prison. Hahaha, Europe imprisoned by bankers. And the bankers get all the space up top.

3 years ago was 2009. As far as I'm concerned, the depression started in 2008 after the collapse of Lehman Brothers.

Of course, stopping the construction would be ridiculous but I don't think that Europe needs more ivory towers while resistance against the power of Brussels/Frankfurt is growing.

Next to that I think all bankers, without exemptions, are idiots that don't know what they're doing and are merely reacting to hunches rather than having a complete sense of understanding of the economy. Therefore this tower can't count on my sympathy.

There's a point when costs to build don't match the quantity of jobs provided. Otherwise, why can't we argue that things that cost more money employ more jobs than cheap things? It's because it's not true. A little bit of disappointment on ECB's spending.

The crises started as an American one if you remember. In any case, the building was already late by 2009 and should have started construction even some years before that date. Further major postponements would have further increased the costs substantially. In any case, the whole planning and construction of such a building takes several years. It is actually pretty likely, even in good decades that at some point there'll be a recession.

Unless your proposal is that the ECB should be dissolved it needs a place to be. The current location is an expensive and ineffective mix of rented locations. After more than 10 years of existence it is about time to get something better than some rented office for a central European institutions, wouldn't you think?

It's funny how people who don't pay taxes in the Eurozone (and probably won't even set their foot in the EU) worry about its finances.
God bless you for your care and concern.

P.S. If it was up to me, this tower would be +300m tall.
