At the cost of the closure of a main line. Nimby-ism at its purest.

Trains are noisy, and kill people. What do we do then? Remove rail, put a tramway instead.

Oh, so now you can't travel from Salou to Barcelona or Valencia anymore? Bad luck...

This plan is about the most idiotic thing I've ever suffered.

Deal is reached to fund the restoration of Velez-Malaga tramway, but still no certain date of reopening (though government still aimed to restore services in 2017):

Let's see how it ends up in both systems.

So far only the restoration of the damage suffered by the infrastructure during these years has been agreed in Vélez-Málaga, and there have been so many promises with regards to Jaén tram that I won't believe anything until I see the trams up and running.

First complete test ride on the tram section of the Cádiz - Chiclana tram-train line will take place on March 8.

However, the line is not yet connected to the Seville - Cádiz main line, which means that trams won't be able to reach Cádiz for a while. Therefore, only a limited service between La Ardila (in San Fernando municipality) and Chiclana will be established until said connection is built and the Spanish railway managing company (Adif) gives green light to trams using the 10 km section between La Ardila and central Cáidz.

Opening date hasn't been announced yet.

From Cities Today

Las Palmas to build new bus rapid transit system
28th March 2017

Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, is to construct a new bus rapid transit system, to be known as MetroGuagua, with the financial support of the European Investment Bank (EIB). Work will begin on the high-capacity line over the next quarter, with the aim of building 11.7 kilometres of roadway dedicated to bus transport.

“MetroGuagua, which will connect Hoya de la Plata with Manuel Becerra (75 percent of daily journeys within the city take place in this area), will not only improve public mobility in the lower part of the city, but also enable the restructuring of the entire network, providing a better service in the suburbs, where journey and waiting times will be reduced,” said José Eduardo Ramírez, Councillor and Chairman of Guaguas Municipales
