MOSCOW | Kremlin Reconstruction

Moscow Kremlin is changing. Now the Stalinist-era building #14 is under deconstruction, will be replaced by a public archaeoligical site and probably later by Voskresensky monastery which was demolished in 1930.

The reconstruction process is controlled by UNESCO

The ancient monastery was magnificent. It's a pity that you can possibly recover the building, but never the artworks which no doubt the jewel case sheltered.

It's sad they are destroying a beautiful building even if it's for a good reason.

There are so many wonderful buildings to reconstruct in Moscow on empty plots or on architrash buildings place!!!
Why to destroy this???

The first photo demonstrates the only viewpoint from which that building might have looked beautiful. Overall, it was a big boring unimpressive box, an awkward compromise between functionalism and neo-classic (as many early Stalinist buildings were).

Well, the idea is to reconstruct the buildings on the very spot they used to be. Choosing some other places for this would be weird.
This said, I'm not a big fan of the idea to rebuild the monasteries (there were actually two of them) completely. Undoubtedly, their destruction is a great loss and a crime against culture committed by the Soviets but there is too little information left to reconstruct them faithfully. There is a risk of acquring some so-so pastiches.
But making an archaeological spot would be a reasonable idea.

And this is what both monasteries looked like.
To the left there is Chudov (Archangel Michael) Monastery, to the right there is Voznesensky (Ascension) Monastery.

Here is Chudov Monastery from above

St. Catherine church of Ascension Monastery, an early work (and the only one in Moscow) by Carlo Rossi, famous for his St. Petersburg ensembles.

Is there any news about this reconstruction?
Has there been any progress?

No, there isn't. Now there is a sort of archaeological park there, with remains of old foundations seen through glass windows.

How about building the monastaries on another place instead of ruining the stalinist building?

Interesting work. Building #14 wasn't bad but the monastery was/will be stunning.

I was thinking about the State Kremlin Palace. Now obviously its an integral part of one of Russia's most pivotal eras. Its a huge building and has hosted many great occasions. Its of high quality - especially the marble. Although the interior is a little bland IMO.

The only problem is that the Palace's new architecture does stand out in the Kremlin's ensemble of buildings. So I was thinking about giving it a substantial reclad, allowing it to be used as a hall, but blending into the surroundings.

Perhaps have it in a Russian revival style, complete with ornamentation, statues and art etc. Reflecting Russia's history to ancient times, but also having a special focus on 20th and 21st Century events.

If they are planning on doing work on building #14, then surely the Kremlin State Palace is worth considering as a project?

First of all, the stalinist building is already ruined (quite long ago), so the question doesn't make sense.
Moreover, the very idea of building the monasteries somewhere else seems preposterous, mocking the concept of historically accurate reconstruction.

No, I've never heard of any plans of the kind. Though the State Kremlin Palace is generally hated no proposals of its demolition or serious reconstruction were raised.
The idea of reclading it doesn't suit me. I have no notion how to make it right, there is a very high risk that it will lead to some monstrosity, much worse than the existing situation.
So I'd better let it stay like a trace of its era.
And the additional difference between the building #14 and the State Kremlin Palace is that buildings replaced by the latter were not such gems. So to reconstruct them instead doesn't look like a brilliant idea either.
